Man, Camo , I've doon the same damm thing. I had it narrowed to 6 states to begin with. I finally narrowed it to 2. Then one. I was going to say most off Texas hunting is on prvt. land for whitetails. West Texas has some public land in Big Bend and the Pecos. Desert Mulies too. I need you to take some illegals out of Ca. too while you are at it. Maine is expensive to live. Have allot of Moose there. I forgot to tell you that Wy. has some great fishing too. Rainbow,Brown,Cuthroat, that's in the streams and rivers. The lakes and Resivoirs have it all.

I'll give you the skinny on Texas
Bad Stuff
Mexico for starters. The state is overrun with illegals. Look for them to keep moving el norte though as jobs are saturated. They are a massive burden on our public systems such as the schools, hospitals, courts, police and prisons. The culture is also chaning in Texas. Just about everything is in two languages now and there are as many spanish radio stations as english. Enough on that.
Not a lot of public land. compared to the size of the statethis is true.
Leases are expensive and getting fewer. Just the nature of the beast.
Property taxes. For home owners our taxes are through the roof.
county politics. Texas still suffers from good ole boy politics. This is not just old white guys having their way either. Many hispanic dominant counties are getting pretty radical in how they administer (or don't) justice and settlements.
Good Stuff
Public land. There is actually more than you think. People just need to do the research.
Hunting seasons. We get two months for dove and 1 week in the winter. General deer season is two months with additional season before and after for bowhunters, disabled and general spike/doe extended seasons. If you are on the highest level MLDP for your ranch you get a five month deer season with no restrictions. I received 105 deer tags from the state last year that I could use between Oct 1 and Feb 28. We have a generous quail and waterfowl season. Javelina season last something like 9 months I think. Muley season is about a month I think? We also have drawings for Pronghorn and gators. Hogs can be hunted 365. Turkey season is two months in the fall, one month in spring.
Choices of animals to hunt. Popular hunts in Texas include whitetail (excellent), muleys, hogs (massive population), geese and ducks (excellent), gators, pronghorn, dove, quail, pheasant, varmints, predators (excellent), turkey (excellent) and so on. We also have more exotics than probably what is left in Africa and parts of Asia.
TP&W is a good game management organization without a lot of silly procedures. What types of weapons used and which calibers is pretty liberal. We generally have big bag limits. Our licenses are cheap. I think a super combo is $60 and you get something like 5 whitetail tags, 2 muley tags, five turkey tags, and covers you for exotics, hogs, varmints, and predators. There is no tag for mountain lions if you can actually find one. It also gives you year round salt and freshwater fishing rights and a couple of tags for drum I think.
We have good gun laws. Our CHL is considered the model to be followed although I would just assume let any non criminal carry at will, but that is me. We have no restrictions on legal guns or ammo. Owning an assault rifle is not frowned on, hell, even a lot of the hippies in Austin like guns. Gun and hunting are part of the culture here.
We have no state income tax but a brutal sales tax.
Texas has 20 million residents and God only knows how many illegals. It is like it's own country in that respect. We have a lot of problems and a lot of assholes. But it's still a great place to live. Our economy is rock solid. Rural life in Texas, outside of far south Texas, is pretty much unchanged. You have a lot of freedom to do what you want without too much hassle. We've done things on our ranch that would have had us fined into oblivion if not thrown in jail in other states but no one raises and eyebrow here.
If I ever decide I ahve to leave I will probably be looking at Wyoming, Montana, Idaho or Alaska.

Man, that sounds allot like Calif. ! Damm illegals getting free everything here. F'ing B.S. ! I didn't know you didn't have state taxes. Also you have that Johnny Sutton piece of crap there that needs to be hung. Putting the two border patrol angents in jail for doing their job for 10 and 11 yrs. ? WTF ? And now he's going after a sheriff there for shooting at a car that illegals tried to run him down with and hit an illegal in the back seat. I know

Last time I checked, doing their job didn't mean firing on someone who was fleeing, failing to report the shooting, and picking up brass and tossing it to destroy the evidence. The smuggler is a POS, so were the BP agents. There is an active agent from the same area who posts on another board under the name NagantM39. You should see what HIS opinion is about the two.
Gilmer Hernandez does seem to be getting screwed, different witnesses say different things about that shooting. Edwards county and Rock Springs are the poorer without him.

Well be carefull what you wish for. I don't want to fight about Illegals, I'm glad someone told me but thats not the fight I wanted. We have 'em up here too go into the store and its in spanish here too. I wanted to see some fights about how great someones state is over another, and why.
Charley We need a sarcasim button on here.... for guys like you.
I ordered my map today, Now I need a bunch of pricks to stick in it oops I mean pins.
More Info like what Mark had would be great Thanks mark.
WYO was CA the 1? or is that just where you ended up.
I was born in MD and lived here my whole life. I decided I wanted out when the Dems. started talking about giving the county council powers to write gun control laws. The spanish isn't swaying me to stay, but this is a blue state and its killing me. For those that are geographicaly challenged MD is south of the Mason Dixon line ...Makes me a southern gentleman
Havent heard from kev yet and the great state of Idaho. I love a place where you can ask someone where you from and what do you do and they answer I DA HO

Montana sucks go home and tell a friend. Now wheres that sarcasm button WE have a great state. If you want to hunt whitetails, muleys, elk, and pronghorn. There is also coyotes, gophers, prarie dogs, jack rabbits, cottontails, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and lots of other small things to practice your shooting ability. we get some good bird hunting pheasents, grouse, partrigdes, duck and goose i am sure i ammissing some stuff. Lots of public gound to hunt and private if you can swing it with the land owner. Some tags to draw in certain areas but you can get over the counter deer and elk tags. Good fishing in some areas i dont fish a lot but some of the state is great. Muskies close to me the biggest in the state was taken about 45 min from my house. Did i leave anything out. IF so just ask.

Well camo
I'll say that you would be going wrong if you went to Ks, Ar, Ok, or Tx. Here in Kansas we have some great upland game hunting, and deer is awsome, no veh. inspections and we get all four seasons... Maybe in the same day but all four none the less.
Taxes well we got em and depending on which county you live in tags and registration can be from little to alot. No mountains and fishing is ok but not great. We did get CCW but as far as owning any full auto stuff, sorry not yet. You can have as many girlfriends as you want but be warned around here they may just get a tad irriatated and all get together to come visit ya.
As far as having your own space and not seeing anyone unless you wanted to theres some great places around here. You'll be surrounded by wheat fields which means you're going to have some awsome coyote hunting. If you move into a small town and let the farmers of the area know that you may end up with more fields to hunt than you have time.
Since we are fairly central I can make Dallas in about 6 hrs, Tulsa in 3, Denver in 8. Come summer months we get some pretty nice thunder storms and since it is Tornado alley a couple of those. (still take tornados over earthquakes).
Hope this helps
Take care Be safe Poacher.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be sarcastic, just trying to provide information about the case that an awful lot of internet "news" sites and blogs conveniently leave out. It isn't just CBS, ABC, NBC, and CNN that filter news to fit their beliefs.

Pat, you forgot moose ! Camo, Hell no Ca, wasn't my first pick. I was born here and in for 2 yrs. 82 and 83 I lived in Wyo. worked out of Casper running cable. Worked on a ranch for a year in Chugwater. Then a ranch near Natrona. That's were I have my 40 acres. I'm probably going to sell it and my house here and get something in Cody area . Last year there was a nice 3 bed. 2 bath. home on 80 acres , all fenced and a brand new HUGE metal barn with corrals, out bldg., etc. for $280,000.00 ! Hell, a tiny little house where I live would be $400,000.00 plus . Charley. It has come out that the the prosicution lied about the evidence and the gave the POS drug smuggler imunity to testify against the border agents and after the trial, the smuggler got caught again smuggling drugs. My book, that discredits his testimony. Then there is the matter that the smuggler supposedly pulled a gun on the agents too. To me, The smuggler was here illegally, smuggling drugs. He should be in jail, not the agents. and 11 and 10 yrs. ? come on, get real. There's more to it than has come out. Bush's be kind to illegals, and give them amnisty is major B.S..Kissing Mexico's ass every chance he gets. If you ask me, Mr, Sutton is in on the take with the smugglers. He is sure getting something out of defending illegals and prosicuting law inforcement officals. They should have just killed the POS and been done with it. Now the illegal sues us ? Come on. Let's get a real conservitive for president. not a closet liberal. sorry Camo. This crap just sets me off. I see it everyday here. Wy. here I come. Don't see many of them up there. By the way, Mont. was my 2nd choice and Idaho 3rd. Some good land deals in Mont. too. PS. Wyo. is a red state that votes Rep. 70+%. Not that there is much difference these days. Like in the movie, The weak aint inheriting anything west of the Mississippi.

man, that's not even the half of it. I know you work in a hospital too. I work in two of them . All day long. free babies for the illegals. And their babies are American citizens ! They cost this state about 50 million ayear in medical cost that you and I (I in Ca.) have to pay for. Something is really wrong with our goverment... Signing off now. Sorry again Camo !

I lived in Wyoming three times and played music all over the state....
I love parts of Wyoming , but youhave to travel through some really crappy looking country before you get to the beautiful country...(Sorry Wyoming, I went to college in Laramie and do love the state)
But, you have to live there for a whole year before you can get a resident license...That sucks...
I have lived in Montana since 1988 and I love it here also..Oh, I spent the first 37 years of my life in Penna..
Montana has a 6 month wait till you can get a resident license...We have some of the best flyfishing in the lower 48..We also have very good Walleye fishing up by Helena. If you like BIG lakes we have Fort Peck Reservoir..
You can buy Bull Elk tags over the counter, along with Buck tags. You can buy up to 8 Whitetail doe tags over the counter...Along with 2 or 3 Antelope tags, after you send in and get your first tag..
We have special areas where you can put in for HUGE Mulies and Big Bull areas. They are tough to draw, but if you get one, oh boy..
We have no sales tax..No inspection, gas is cheaper than where you live now...
And, If you have asthma like me, we have no humidity, lerast not enough to worry about..Again, Wyoming has alot of the same things...But I can't afford to live anywhere in Wyoming that I would like to...Well, Montana has the same problem..But here is a little known secret...
Bozeman, Missoula, Helena, Great Falls (Yuck) are all to expensive for me, along with Hamilton and Kalispell, Whitefish..etc. Homes range from 150,000 to over 350,000$ and more.
But (Shhhh) Butte is located just as close to the mountains and the blue ribbon trout streams and you can still buy a fixer upper for 15,000-20,000$
A nice home will run about 50-75000$.
Land is a lot more expensive than when I came her in 1988, but you can find 20 acres, SOMETIMES, for about 40,000$...
I can be in the Highland Mountains and sitting watching my favorite elk meadow in about 1 and 1/2 hours....
If you need any more info , let me know...
We get about 320 some days with sunshine here..Gotta love that. It rained most of the summer back in central Penna for as long as i can remember and still does according to my family....Burn in the summer, freeze in the damp winters. Spring and especially fall is very nice back ther, but the first time I heard and Elk bugle in yellowstone Park, I was hooked.....Good Luck:

I agree that the 1 yr. wait on residency is b.s. . most states I hunt in it's 6 mon. As far as driving though crappy country before you you get to the beautiful country, well one nice thing about the crappy country is you aren't looking at wall to wall houses like here in Ca.. There is many places in So. Cal. that you even have any space between cities. They all run together. You can drive 50-100 mi. in Wy. before you hit another town. (Central Wy.) I do not like eastern Wy.. Mostly private land . Wind blows all the time because most of it is flat. There are some mtn. ranges though. Medicine Bow Nat. Forest in the s/e corner bordering Colorado is nice. The n/e side of the state you have the Black Hills Nat. Forest. Great whitetal hunting. Where my property is in the central part of the state you have scattered mtn. ranges. Mine is butted up to the Rattlesanake Mtns. Not real high at 8200 ft. tops but have elk and deer. Antelope all over below. Killed for few nice ant. bucks there and one nice buck deer. Some friends there have 90,000 acres ! On the west side of the mtns. That's how I found my 40 acres. You won't believe me but got it for $17,500 10 yrs. ago.before I got divorced I had 30 acres in Utah right on the Paunsaugunt Plateau at the base of the Pink Cliffs, south end of Bryce Nat. Park. Some of you guys out west might know it. Monster Mulies. North Rim of the Grand Canyon 50 mi. away. Zion Nat. Park 30 mi.. Bryce Nat. Park 50 mi. (have to drive all the way around mtns.) Glen Canyon Reservoir and Dam/Lake Powell. 40 mi. Southern Ut. is beautiful but I'll take western Wy. anyday. Especially n/w Wy. (Cody, Yellowstone, etc.). I love Mont. too and that surely would be my 2nd choice. If I was to move again and stay in Ca. It would be Bishop, Ca. Right at the foothills of the Eastern Sierra Mtns. It reminds me of western Wy. You have lots of lakes, streams, good deer hunting. Even have Tule Elk if you can draw a tag. Mule Days Celebration. Mammoth Mtn. Sking. Dreamin' again , sorry.

Wyo: I think I am pretty sure about where you are ..I remember the rattlesnake mountains..
Do you by any chance know where Highland is?
I have a very good friend who now lives in Montague, Calif. who grew up in Highland..His dad is a real good guy, I haven't stopped in ti see him for sheesh, five years or so. He owns Highland, the bar, store, gas station, couple small houses there. His name is Bob Steelman Sr.
I used to stop there with his son Bobby when we went up that way. We lived in Cheyenne at the time. I was going to school in Laramie and he was going to school in Cheyenne... He also played bass guitar in our fifties/sixties band...

was gonna stay out of this but, well you know texians can't stay out of nothin! wouldn't want to live nowhere but here! hardly any silly gun laws, few we got have gotten shorter, plenty of game and fishin, only draw back it's is gonna cost ya! but at times you can find a good soul like timber that'll take ya fer free!
okay gotta cheap idea for the whole illegal alien thing! we buy about a half dozen nile crocs and drop em in the Rio Grande, when the first one tries to swim across and gets eaten, the others would be kinda hesitant to cross! course if they are like wildebeest the pressure of the ones behind will push the ones ahead into the river! maybe we need two dozen crocs
