morning guys.  hate being in a funk so early in the morning as it tends to ruin the rest of the day (if ya allow it) but i found myself up early this morning, no chance of getting back to sleep and cranky.

august of 2007, my bro and i went down to nebraska with our father and hunted a place that offered some real affordable elk hunts.  we got two and dad got himself a real nice black hawaiian ram.  since then, my bro's been working on a time to get back there and get dad on a big bull elk.

well, the hunt was scheduled for this weekend some time back.  leave friday early; hunt over the weekend; drive back monday.  dad would hunt elk.  bro and i would hunt whatever exotics (fallow deer for me) of interest were on the place.  no $$$ was put down from my end but dad seemed to want both his boys there for the event so i was going to make every effort to be along when he got his bull, even though i knew, with the time of year and what i do for work, it'd be a real long shot.

stars seemed to be lining up just about perfect for me to be able to turn things over at work to my second in command and then i got the news tue. afternoon from a crying wife that her grandmother on her mothers side had just passed away.  i mean passed away just short minutes ago.  her mother actually called her while they were removing the life support equipment.  while offering support to her, my mind started working instantly on how this would complicate efforts for the weekend.

wife is the oldest of the grandchildren so the family included her on the funeral decisions.  she knew efforts i was making and planned leave and return days, yet, was told wed. late afternoon that the funeral would be 1pm on monday.

ok, hunt was still doable.  but it would be tricky.  i envisioned getting dads bull sat. or early sun., boning and heading back overnight sun. night.  but it all depended on how dads hunt went.  worst case scenario, i wouldn't make it back, miss the funeral and have to apologize for the next little while.

word came down wed. night i wasn't expecting     ...     i was asked to be a pallbearer (sp).  accept and brush off dads desires of having both his boys on the hunt or decline and look like an ass cause it's "just hunting" to that side of the family and they've no clue how important this is to dad.

well, i accepted and sealed the deal on my participation with this hunt.  called dad and my bro last night wishing them a safe drive and good luck hunting.  plan was to head out at 4am this morning.  should pull into the ranch tonight between 4pm and 6pm.  plenty of time to do some evening glassing for opportunities.  right in the middle of harvest, managing the only private grain inspection lab in the state, everything actually lined up nicely so i'd have been able to go.  lol.  thought work would be my only fly in the ointment with this project.  ya just never know.

anyway, there i was wide awake, no chance of getting any more sleep, staring at a clock this morning that read 4:14, just as my bro would be pulling into my dads place to pick him up.

second year in a row i've missed out on the allen family hunting trip.  needless to say, i'm a little grouchy and irritable.

k

thanks for allowing me to vent a bit.

Korey, I hate to hear your wifes grandma has passed away and that you missed out on your family hunt for the second time now.Hard to not want to hunt but with the task they have asked you to perform I can see why you couldn`t go.
Hope it works out for ya bro and you Kirby and your dad can swing another get together this year to put some horns on the wall and some meat in the freezer.
Gene

I know the feeling. I have been absent for the last decade with no hope for this year. My grandpa keeps calling and asking if there is any chance that I will make it. I hate to tell him no but.......

That's a damn shame, but we just don't control that sort of thing. Maybe next year!

Two Augusts in a row I lost a Grandma while the family was on vacation. Quick change plans and head to Texas for their funeral services. The next July my Grandaddy called me on the phone, and asked if I was taking the wife and kid on vacation in August. I told him not that year. His reply was "Well Good, because I'm not ready to die and I didn't want you to change MY plans on the Mattter."

Grandaddy died four yeqr later in January. I still miss him. He laid steel for the railroads and saw indians in war paint and Men land on the Moon.

eveing guys. funeral was this afternoon. it was nice. still not happy with the timing of it all but ya react to what's thrown at ya. being there was certainly the right thing to do. i was honored to be the only non-blood family member asked to carry the casket. me along with 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. i'd always felt it an honor, which is a lot of the reason why i accepted the invitation and missed the hunt. that and the simply fact that the situation demanded i pay my respects. without her, i'd not have the blessings of a wonderful wife and my little boy. she was a good women, always treated me well and i needed to be in attendance.  didn't make it easy though.

insult to injury or salt in the wound (whichever you prefer).  found out earlier today dad and my bro got back from the hunt sunday evening.  dad and mom actually attended the funeral.  told him in all honestly i really wasn't happy to see him with a little smile on my face.  lol.  who'da thunk it.  i could have gone on the hunt and still met my responsibilities, after all.  isn't that just a hoot.

water under the bridge.    didn't get the full story of his elk and what kirby got but i'm sure that's coming.

Sure hope you get to make the next hunt. That time is just as valuable as funeral duties. LOL, would not want my funeral to interfere with a good hunt, wc

Sorry to hear the passing, life does seem to have some paths for us to take, not always to our choosing.

So plan for next year.
