IMHO it is a cartridge whose capacity is larger and performance improved over the the comparable standard cartridge, altough until recently a magnum rifle case had to have a belt, that is no longer true.

The term "magnum" has great marketing power. The 357 Magnum is a round just about anyone has heard of, regardless of their knowledge about guns. While it's certainly powerful, it's certainly not the powerhouse "blow away anything" death ray that many of those people would describe it as.

Would the "38 Long" or the "357 Improved" have sold as well?

That is pretty much how I would define it, if I were emperor of the world.

Unfortunately, marketing has happened, in some cases, other cases, I think "magnum" is plenty justified.

At least for now, there is a distinct difference between the "magnums" and the "baby brothers" they were hatched from. The .38 spl/.357 Mag, the .44 spl., .44 Rem. Mag.  The Magnum is a significantly higher pressure cartridge, compared to it's beginnings.

The 10mm/.40S&W did it backwards.

Now, there are very high pressure pistol rounds that are not "magnums", but perform at , IMO, "magnum" level, the first one I think of is the Casul, that new .500S&W too.

As rifles go, pretty much anything with the "weatherby" name hung on it, deserves magnum" hung on it. Weatherby felt that best performance dropping game was hit them VERY hard, with a very big, heavy bullet, moving very fast.

He was not wrong.

I haven't looked up my data on 7mm/08 vs 7mm Rem. Mag, to see if it fits my "operating pressure" criteria, maybe later when I am @ the bench, going trap sjhooting shortly, no time now.
