What is a boxer primer?  Is it round or that other funny shape?  Can one reload brass that is designed for "boxer primers"?

Boxer primed is reloadable.  when you buy primers to reload they are boxer primers.  Berdan primed is what is used in military rounds, there is a crimp in berdan primed brass in the case  and while military stuff is reloadable for the most part before you can reprim the brass you have to take the "military crimp" out of it.  They make tools to take the crimp out after that you can reload with boxer primers. The down side to this is that if you ream the crimp out of the brass too far your boxer primers won't seat right or fall out. this just takes some time and feel to learn  but once it's done thats it.

  Take care Be safe Poacher.

Boxer primers were originally developed by Col Edward Boxer, an English Ordnance officer during the late 1860s. Boxer primers have an intregal anvil, the little metal "tit" that the priming compound is crushed against. Boxer primers fit in a cartridge case that has one central flash hole.

Berdan primers were developed by Hiram Berdan, the commander of the famed Berdan's Sharpshooters, a regiment of marksman raised during the War of Northern Aggresion, known as the Civil War to you Yankee boys. Berdan primers consist of the metal cup and priming compound only. The anvil is part of the cartridge case.  Berdan primers fit in a cartridge case with a raised "tit" centers in the primer pocket, with usually two flash hols ojn either side of the anvil.

Both kinds can be reloaded, but boxer primers are much easier for handloaders to deal with.

Kind of ironic, Berdan primers were developed in the US, and became a standard in Europe, where the Boxer, developed in Europe, became the US standard.
