both of the rifles you have listed are 500 yard class rifles  with a bit of shooting skill. For deer at 100 yards, a 243,6mm,270,30-30,7x57,25-06,308,30-06 is more than enough gun.

sniperbill.

What type of glass are you using with that 260?  I would go ahead and zero for 100 and then figure your comeups as needed.

   Take care Be safe Poacher.

Sniperbill

Welcome to HB. Good to have you here.

I think you cant do much better for deer under 100yrds than the 260.

like you said, little reciol, and if its a tight shooter, your have more than enough gun.

All the best

Good glass on that rifle. If you are using the balistic plex for the 260 I would go ahead and zero for 100.  That should put you on for the plex zero's. The 260 is a solid weapon for deer and you should be able to drop a nice sized buck or doe with it.

  Take care Be safe Poacher.

I own the 7mm STW and believe me it is flat shooting and can take deer up to 600 yards if the shooter is up to the task.  I personally don't care for shooting deer at those ranges because hitting them is the easy part , making a killing shot is the hard part. I really hate taking a chance on crippling a deer and letting it get away and be wasted. Some people  can make those shots , most can't.

The last buck i killed, at what i consider long range was 427 yards on the laser range finder. I took it with my 338 Ultra Mag and the 200 gr Nosler CT BT and Rel 22 . The deer just dropped and never even kicked. With the right rifle and plenty of practice anyone who can shoot can kill deer at extended ranges. I live in the eastern part of TN on the VA border, long ways from Mississippi but if you are ever up this way give me a call.

Hey sniper.  My brother lives just outside of Corinth and shoots a 30/378.  He's looking to start up a shooting range and hunting club.  Email me your phone number and address and I will have him get in touch with you.  You two would probably have a lot to talk about? He's ex-military, maybe he already knows you?  He could certainly answer all your concerns about taming recoil on the big boomers, especially the 260 and 7STW.  (see my profile for my email)

Good hunting.  LB

Hey Sniper.  I've been through Corinth a few times.  When I lived in Memphis (back in the '80s and early '90s) I would drive on HWY 72 through Corinth on my way to Birmingham AL.

As far as long range shooting and .260 rifle... the .260 should be just fine.  I've killed deer as far as 226 yards with my 7-08, and my father has a kill out to 252 yards with his 7-08.  Those are hardly 7mm-STW class cartridges, but they are very accurate and retain plenty of down-range energy.  I see no reason why the .260 wouldn't work just as well.

Hi there Bill.  How's the weather in Alaska? Oops, I mean Corinth.

If that new 260 is grouping good for you it sounds like you're all set.   You don't need to send the rifle to a gunsmith.  Just get out and practice shooting.   Do you have a shooting range you can practice at?   The more you practice the better you'll be.

Oh, you snipe.  So you must get some shooting in almost every day.  That will help you hunt deer better and shoot them at longer range.

This brings back an old memory.  One of my buddies went through Ranger school a long time ago.  He was proud to be a Ranger, and once told me a story of how his squad beat the crap out of a dude who was going around telling people he was a Ranger.  That dude was no Ranger, just a wannabe.  He learned his lesson the hard way.   US Army Rangers are a tough bunch for sure.

Best of luck with the hunting.
