Found this place while searching for some info on reloading .40.  Been lurking for a while and just had to log in and say "hi" and thanks for the information.

There is so much that can be learned from experienced reloaders.  Heck, I learned things I didn't even know to ask about.

My first reloads of .40 are ready to go and I'm going to finish up the .9 and will be taking them out to the range later this afternoon.

THANKS!!!

welcome aboard!

best of luck w/ your loads. i was simply amazed at the massive performance difference there is between loading your own 40's, and buying loaded factory stuff. unbelievable!

you'd think w/ the 40 being a relatively new, hi-pressure cartridge that factory stuf would be near as good as handloaded stuff (like the wsm situation), but it sure isn't. enjoy!

Good luck at the range, SCOOTER, and welcome to THB.

How 'bout some specifics on the components you're working with?  >>  klallen

For the Tarus .9 once fired officer Winchester Brass (Officers have their own area at our range and never pick up brass); small CCI primers; 125 grn LRN; 4.1 grains of Unique powder.  Out of 100 rounds I had 2 that didn't fire.  Not even a mark on the primer.  I am used to shooting factory 115 grain JRN and it was the one I tried first, so I know I was flinching terribly.  (I think I was even ducking for the first 10) After the first 40 rounds, accuracy got better as I gained confidence in my loads.  Ejected brass looked good.

For the SA XD .40 - Once fired officer Winchester brass; Small CCI primers; 155 grn LSWC; loaded 20 each 4.8,4.9,5.0,5.1,5.2 grains of Unique powder.  Out of 100 rounds I had one bad primer.  The only thing I noticed was that when I was shooting the loads under 5.0 grains, the gun was starting to "struggle" a bit ejecting.  The ejected brass looked good.  No buldges, splits, or cracks.  But I didn't expect any as these were light loads.  It was soooooooooo much better than any factory load and surprizingly accurate.  (I'm still learning to shoot this one)

All in all it was almost as awesome as the second time I fired a handgun.  (trying hard to forget the first time - long story for another time)

Dang it - I'm so excited!!!!!

If they are honest, I kinda think that everybody's first handloads are treated that way. I remember the first handloads I fired, in a Ruger Security Six revolver. Half my mind was asking 'what do I do if the gun blows up?'. It doesn'tof course, but the thought is sure there!

Hey scooter

Good luck with the loading! glad to have tyou around. your def at the right place ot ask questions, and lear more, i know i did.

Hey Charley, i think your prob right,  but then again, i think its better to err on the save side, dont you think? Whe nlaoding std cals, with available reloading data, i still feel quite safe, but when starting to load for the od-ball cals not normally used, it starts to get interesting...:sofa:

all the best
