Well heres yet another guy working his way into handloading.  I have been toying with the idea for over a year now but i finially broke down and bought the lee O press kit, cheap i know but it will suffice for my needs.  Previously I have had a bit of experience with my great uncle reloading 12ga shotshells so i'm not entirely uneducated in the ideas at hand.  I'm planning on starting wtih .38 and .357 then moving to .40 for my new hi-point carbine then eventually 7.62x39 and .30-30.

just thought i'd pop my head up to say hi! :sofa:

First welcome to the HB. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here and find alot of info from alot of loaders that have a ton of experience in the fine art of rolling your own.  Once you get into it tho' your going to end up spending money for pretty much every cal you have. Then you start buying those cals that are wildcats or just odd cause you know you can find a die somewhere that will size it down or work for just the rifle.   It's a dangerous sport money wise .

Once again welcme to the HB.   Take care Be safe Poacher.

i'm no stranger to expensive hobbies.  there for a while i was big into the speedball veriety of paintball.  Easily go shoot 50 bucks of paint, 15 in air, and god knows what else.  on top of that my guns could buy me new real guns.

Quite similar in many ways, bye bye wallet!

Handloading kinda grows on you. Nothing like dropping the hammer on your first handloaded cartridge. When and if you start bullet casting, it will feel like you are sending your children downrange!  Good luck, and ask anyone here if you need an answer. I am sure someone here will have run into whatever problem you have.

Don't appologize for the Lee equipment. It won't last as long as the other guy's presses, but it will load good amunition if you do your part.

Rest assured i'll be frequenting here for quite some time asking all the usual beginners questions!

ohh while its on my mind.  I keep getting somewhat conflicting reports on a couple of "can i reload this" topics.

1. can the silver colored casings be reloaded? i know i have some .38's and .357's that are this material(nickel? steel? hell if i know)

2. berdan primers.  I've heard that it "is" possible to reload them its just a pain.  What is involved and is it even worth it?

To answer both questions----The nickel cases will split sooner than the brass ones------ they are loadable --if there are two flash hole toss 'em in the trash---Berdan primed cases are not even worth the bother:shameon::shameon::shameon:

I'll primarially be loading round nose wad cutters for use in my smith 686.

I'll start. I use Unique, or Flammable Dirt for most of my handgun loads. It's been around since the early 1900s, and there are better powders for specufic applkications. IMO and IME though, Unique works better in a broader range of cartridges than almost everything else.  It will give reasonably good results in anything between the .25 ACP and .44 Magnum. Also a decent cast bullet powder in many rifle cartridges, and several shotshell loads.  Not the best in anything, but pretty good in almost everything.

i assume theres just one type of unique?

for now i'm loading .38's' and .357's, .40's and I will probably move from there into a few 7.62x39's, .30-30's and mabye .30-06.  Unless I pick up a new toy those are the only calibers i'll be reloading in.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind but i'm set for now.  I've got nearly 500 .38 and .357 brass as well as probably 500 or so for my .40.

I'm planning on picking up some unique within a week or two, I'm gonna go ahead and use up a fair bit of my red dot before I do.

One thing I noticed about my .38 hbwc loads with red dot was that they tended to put off a fair bit of smoke.  Is this normal for red dot? or is this a sign of something?

edit: btw, I loaded up probably 75 or 80 .38 hbwc's with red dot as per lee's manual(2.5 grn if i recall).  They shot well, no hiccups.  As I said they were a tad smokey.  They had very low recoil due to the low charge and seemed to be pretty accurate.  I didn't get to do any real range time with them but I was hitting my target at 30 yards.
