I just started reloading, in fact Ive only loaded for my 243 so far with great results with necksizing fireformed brass. My step father just bought a 270wsm and both of my brothers shoot a 270. Im curious if a neck sizing die will for a 270 will work on the 270wsm. We bought a 2 die set for the wsm but its only for full length sizing, but am getting a 3 die set for 270 with the neck sizer, but dont know if the diameter of the wsm case would prevent it from working in the 270 die. Hows that for a rookie question?

If you will pick up a NRA's Book of Handloading from the NRA bookstore, it gives all the Sami Specs for all cartridges that you can get that info from, and a lot more.

I don't think the WSM being such a wide case with hardley any taper, will fit in the standard die and if it did, it would be to short to reach the neck sizeing part of the die. You might be able to do the reverse and neck size a 270 Win in the 270 Short Mag die. My opinion you will have to purchase a set of dies for the 270 WSM. and number 47 shell holder. If you use regular oil based sizeing lube on the 270 Short make sure you keep it off of the 35 degree shoulder or you will end up with dents in the shoulder when full length sizeing. The short magnums dies cost no more than regular dies and you should be able to find a set between 20.00 to 35.00 just about anywhere they stock reloading supplies or on the internet auctions like ebay. The best powders to start loading this round with is AA Mag-pro or Rel 19 in that order and use Win WLRM mag primers , because they are not as hot as Fed 215 and everyone that owns a 270 WSM seems to get better accuracy with this primer. Mag-pro works best with 140 gr bullets and Rel 19 may be the best with 130 gr. I would use a good bullet if you plan on using this rifle for game bigger than Deer, like the Accubond , Interbond or Triple-Shock. Good loading.

Bea175 pretty much answered it, as I don't think the WSM will go into the standard 270 die.
I've always had a bit of trouble with neck sizing. I've got neck dies for 22-250 and 308. After sizing, the empty cases fit in the chamber and the bolt closes easily. But when the bullet is seated in the case the bolt becomes hard to close, and after firing the bolt is hard to open. I'm not using hot loads, and the cases are all fired in the same rifle.
In my hunting rifles, whether they be for varmints or deer, I full length resize to ensure complete reliability. Accuracy has been just fine.

thanks for the quick replies
thats kind of what was figureing bea175, we'll just full length size them. I liked the results with the neck sizing I did with the 243 and wanted to try it with the wsm. Now I know for sure. thanks again

Bea, the bullets still have at least .100" clearance from the rifling. One rifle is a Ruger and the other is Remington. Long throats in each. In the Rem 308 I can load some bullets to the lands but found better accuracy by seating them deeper in the case. I think my neck dies hate me.

The only thing that will solve the problem is turn the neck on the case.

That was my thought BEA, sounds like the case is the problem. A couple Questions Are you checking the length of the case before and after sizing?
Are you chamfering the necks? And last but not least,
Are you using the maximum length suggested by a reloading hand book?
Some Max lengths don't work in some rifles.
Just some thoughts.

Gunrunner;
Another suggestion concerning your neck sizing situation. I'd mike the O.D. of the neck before & after seating a bullet. I'd also consider getting some cerro-cast & casting the chamber & then mike the O.D. of the neck area there.
Have you tried brass from a different maker? Or are you just seating 6.5 mm bullets in your .257 Roberts? .

CB, that's been on my mind too, so I'm going to check the neck diameter before and after puting a bullet in there. I resized some 7Mag brass the other day by backing off the full length die. The cases fit in the chamber with no problem. Now I need to try it with bullets in the necks. That'll have to wait a while though.
After I resized the brass I packed up the Lee Deluxe die set and sent it back to Midway. The bullet seater is not right at all. A bullet should fit through the hole in the die and a 7mm bullet only goes in a little bit, then gets stuck. I ordered the Redding set to replace it. That and the Hornady 162gr bullets should be here soon.

You got that right Timber. I already have three sets of Redding. Not sure why I decided to try that Lee deluxe set. It didn't turn out so deluxe. I'm keeping the Lee 45ACP set I got. It's working great.

Fella's;
I'm using Dillon, RCBS, and Redding, in alphabetical order.
