IMO I would go digital, however I would reccomend that you purchase one from a local place or Cabelas or Midway. Most of the guys on here have a lot more experience than me. For me the digital was just more productive. I had an RCBS balance scale but It was more trouble than it was worth. Just my opinion. It was very difficult to get to balance out.  I have a Pact and it has worked well for me. As far as your purchase.....

:thumbs::thumbs: Two thumbs up...

I bought my first one on Ebay and the guy didnt package it well so it got busted and he didnt make it up.

You did quite well, IMO. Funny about reloading stuff on ebay, I have seen some stuff bid well above the cost from Midway or Graf's, and some others, like your purchase, that was a pretty good deal. I suppose it depends on what catches someone's eye.

I'd go with a digital scale as well.  This coming from someone who has used both.  The digital scales are more accurate and the biggest advantage is speed.  They are a lot faster than the balance beam types.  Pact makes one for less than $100 that I've been using for some time that works just fine.  If I could afford one, I'd get the automatic powder dispenser types from Lyman.

Another good investment is a powder charger.  They're not real expensive and work great.  For plinking loads I work and work till I get the charge set right and then start dumping rounds, checking every 5th one or so.  For precision work, I'll weigh each and every load.  Again, the biggest advantage is speed.

Welcome to the world of reloading, you'll be hooked now!  A few good manuals and you're off and running!

You did great on your purchase , a good scale and powder measure along with a case trimmer are in your future. I have both a balance beam and digital scale, as well as a set of scale check weights. Each scale is useful to me but I mostly use the digital. While you are deciding on your powder measure you might consider a set of the Lee Powder dippers, very handy and inexpensive.

1Shot

You did very well on the purchase.  The scale is more of a personal thing. I loaded many, many rounds with a balance and I've loaded a ton with my digital.  I have both and use both.  As a matter of fact right now I'm back to my balance because my digital gave up the ghost. It's always nice to have a back up.  For getting started it's your call; I might say on this one go digital... but,  be looking at picking up a balance at some point.

Next on the list is books.  I have Speer, Hornady, Hodgdon, and Sierra.  Each tend to lean a certain way. For instance Hornady will list a bunch of powders for loads but they are using their bullet.  Hodgdon lists a bunch of bullets but they use most of thier powder. They do list others but my personal opinion is that they lean towards theirs.   This is one time when having a bunch of books is not a bad thing.

Congrats on the purchase and I look forward to hearing how rolling your own went.

  Take care Be safe Poacher.

My first reloading book was the Lyman. 1969 Model. I still consult it today. It as good & comprehensive instructions. I like the section on black powder.

I think I am going to buy the new Hornady book. It looks like it will be pretty good. The older ones were very thorough.

My wife bought it for me for Christmas, it's well written and I like it but it does emphasize Hornady equipment.

Well I honestly dont own anything Hornady. Dies, presses, or whatever. I have a friend that has some of the older Hornady manuals and they were just full of good info. More so than some of the others I have seen.

Buy every reloading manual you can afford!! eBay is a great resource for older reloading manuals on the cheap. This is where most of the old manuals I have came from.

I have manuals from as far back as the 60s in my reloading library, you just can not have too many reloding manuals!!

As far as the scale goes, start out with the beam and become familiar with it, then get a digital. If the digital croaks sometime in the future you are comfortable and familiar of the beam you kept as a backup.

Dont sweat brand names as long as you stay with name brand dies, scales....whatever. You will eventually find your favorite brand and stick with it. I like Redding dies for example but have a collection of many different brand dies includeing some old Texan brand dies I still use for my 30-06. RCBS makes some great dies for a good price and are hard to beat for the beginner or veteran reloader.

My primary press is a original Rock Chucker that I have had for years but I also have a Orange Crusher mounted and a old "Texan" C-press I have for a backup just because it was cheap at a pawnshop.

I hope this helps,

Coz
