| The terms are sometimes used interchangably. what do you foks think? Is there a difference between a handloader and a reloader? Tell us your opinion, and why. I'll post my thoughts a bit later.

| I'd say a reloader just follows a recipe and cranks out factory like loads with boring regularity. A handloader searches for the exact perfect combination of components to maximize performance (Not necessarily but most often meaning accuracy) for each firearm, sometimes to the point of obsession. When it comes to 12 guage trap loads I'm a reloader. When it comes to CF rifle and trimming cases to make 2 9/16" 16 guage loads for my 1917 model 12 Win. I'm a handloader. RD

I'd have to say handloader cause I cant stop tinkering with my loads, I have my standard hunting load and I have my playing guns too.

All depends on where you look for the definitions.
Reload=fill back up
Handloader=reload cartridges by hand
Since I use a 'press' and not my Lee Loaders from days gone by, I'd say I'm a reloader and not a 'hand'loader. I actually consider myself to be a experimenter and a student of ballistics....but that's probably a different topic!

| Can't say as I've ever given it much thought which is which, or if there is a difference or needs to be a difference. I'll wait to hear what the consensus definition of each would be by you folks. I simply do what I do. If that's handloading, great. If it's reloading, fine too. I'm sure I've used the two terms, intending to mean the same thing, over the years in conversation.

Handload: quality ammunition built by an individual.
Reload: what you do when your gun runs out of "boolits".

| I'm a hand loading reloader using progressive presses which I do for consistancy & accuracy that I can't buy in a shop ,my ammo is the same:same primer brand,same bullet,same lot & weight of powder and same case it never varies.If you want consistancy with over the counter ammo you have to check each box and buy the same lot number which is printed on the inside flap. | I have to go along with 72 Coupe on this. Most of the brass I load is new brass. Other than that I don't think it really matters which term I use. Gary

| It's irrelevant brass is brass new or fired makes no difference as long as it's correct dimension I use Win,Rem,Fed or Denver 42 & 43 in my 06's. Last edited on 6 January 2008 01:08 AM by sako06

| It is a very small point but loading new unfired brass is not a reload. It is a first load.

| To me it's ammo I've got 5 gallon pails of brass.I used to try to keep track of the once fired.twice fired,etc then gave up.I mic the brass before loading and visually check it for stretching.

| Off topic but one of the guys at the Highpower Match this morning brought a 20mm ammo can full of brass to give away. Lake City 05. I got 1/2 a 5 gallon bucket full.

| Yeah its kind of dirty but it is once fired and I can clean it and have a couple thousand rounds of late model stuff.

| I use a midway vibrating cleaner with corn cob media but first I deprime with my wilson punch then remove the primer pocket crimp with the wilson tool it comes out concentric.

| Handloader. I cast, size, lube and load cartridges that I've developed for my guns. They shoot better than any factory "one size fits all" cartridges that I've tried.

HANDLOADER;how can i make this better,damn the old way is kinda cool,i just need one more tool,crap i am out of empty cases,is that .05 or .06 off of the lands,hmmm 150 gr or 165 gr?,i need to buy more powder i only have 30 different cans,i know i have 10 presses but i want that one!!!my bench fell over,it couldnt hold 1000 lbs of bullets!!!!

| That's s superb response to the poll. When my friends were alive they basically used 2 rifle powders 4895 & 4831 mil surplus for all of their hunting loads.When Sierra Bullets were made in Santa Fe Springs, CA they'd go there & buy seconds by the pound and weigh them all out to get the same weight for their hunting loads & use the rest for practise & plinking.
