I'm on my third. This on is a mod 70 featherweight. With 129gr Hornady's mine like's H450 powder real well. Don't know what I'll use when I run out, haven't seen it anywhere for a long time. With 140gr Hornady's it like's R22. Don't remember right off what I was getting for vel but over 2800. It'll come close to catching my 6.5x06.

Going to jump on the way-back machine for a minute.

Back in the mid to late 80's (it is a bit of a blur now), Woolworth brought a bunch of the 6.5 Swedes into the country. I had a friend that had his own little gun shop but, also worked the sporting goods at Woolworth.

He told me about these and said they were a fantastic gun and a very good buy. I went and bought one thinking I wanted to sporterize it. Well, being a friend he made sure i got a good one.

I got home and found it to be excellent shape and had all matching numbers except the cleaning rod.

So, I said "self...this is too good to chop up and for about $100 I will get another one and chop that one". I bought a second one and I will be darned if that one also was great shape and had matching numbers. I just didn't have the courage to chop it either.

The next day, I went to his shop and told him of my issue of not having the heart to ruin these fine old firearms.

He smiled and told me of a company in Vermont that was cutting 6" off the barrel, remounting the front sight, drilling and tapping for scope, turning the bolt down and putting a plain Jane Monte Carlo stock on them and I could get one from him for $150.

Well after just spending nearly $200 on 2 others , it was a tough thing to turn down.....so I didn't....and I was extremely happy  about the purchase...even though my wife wasn't.

I know I am off topic of what load to use, but I did shoot one of the full originals and of course the sporter model. I was experimenting with loads for it and that was about the time that my wife decided she wanted a new life that did not include me. So she packed most of our stuff and took my 1 1/2 YO daughter and left to carve a new beginning for herself. I did manage to get my daughter every single weekend until she was old enough that Dad wasn't cool enough to spend the weekens with.

But that ended my reloading and lots of others past times. I had to sell many of my guns and relaoding equipment to cover bills. But, I managed to hag on to all 3 of the Carl Gustaf M96's that I had. Never did get back to working up a good load. So maybe this winter when it is 20 below I will try a few loads for next Spring. I will be watching what you all say is good for the ol' Carl Gustaf's.

Well a couple of years ago my Daughter married this young Army guy and moved to Fort Hood. While home on  leave 2 falls ago I got to go hunting here in Maine with him. We also went shooting and he saw my old M96 and had to shoot it. He went through a couple of boxes of factory rounds and like many that shoot this gun, fell in love with it. That Christmas, I gave him one of my original ones and that felt really good.

Guess I rambled way too much. Bottom line...love the gun and caliber and will be watching what everyone likes to reload for it.

Thanks, Guy

Not rambling, cyberguy.  That was a good story.  Passing along rifles that mean something is an American tradition.

I am also a fan of the Swedes.  I have a well used M38 (CG 1905) that will still shoot 2" at 100 yards using iron sights and my 50 year old eyes.  I, too, have wondered how it would do as a scoped sporter but (pardon the pun) can't pull the trigger on it.  So now I am looking for one of the Kimber sporters for a reasonable price.

BTW, my load is 41 gr of RL22 under a Speer 140gr spitzer, CCI primer.  Or 42.5 of the same powder with a Fed 210 primer.  OAL is 3.050.

I love those long throats.

To the long ago poster that said the M38s were cav rifles.  Not true!  Here's a link to a great forum and info source JUST for the Swedes.  Be careful though....don't mention sporterizing...they are purists and collectors, and will bite your head off if you even mention sporterizing.:shameon:

Yesterday I got my M38 back from my brother - even if it's only temporary..

In the 60s, my uncle got the M38 from some big importer in Calif - probably Century Arms. He had it for a few years and sent it to me to sporterize.

Sent the bolt to an outfit in Michigan and had it forged and bent for scope. Great job, probably out of business now.

When I was in Gunsmith school in the mid 70s, I drilled and tapped for Weaver mounts, set the barrel back - there was .009" excess headspace - installed a cock-on-opening kit, a Canjar trigger, and a polish and blue job.

Built a new sporter stock- now someone would have to hold a gun to my head for me to make another scratch stock - I'm not sure that would persuade me... Probably lost the skill - damn!!

Before I mounted a scope, I drilled and tapped for a Redfield receiver sight. After my uncle passed on, the rifle came to me, then in a brotherly moment, since my brother had his heart set on it, I gave it to him..
It really likes 140 Sierra SBT with 48gr H4831. Hodgdon went as far as 53gr with a 140gr. That load probably does not appear in any new manual. I'm just the temporary caretaker, but I'll see if I can talk my bro out of it.
