I've found that my old M38 Swede liked Sierra 140 SBT with 48gr H4831, and standard primer. You should start a few grains under this charge to see what your Swede likes. By the way, when I got mine, it was found to have .009" excess headspace. Since it was partially sporterized, I went all the way with a new stock, Canjar trigger, and corrected headspace by setting the barrel back. Was my favorite rifle for a number of years until my brother talked me out of it. My OAL was also 3". Good shooting.

I do like the 6.5x55, there isn't much it can't do well. The Swedes commonly use it for moose, I've read of folks using it for elk, and I know it makes a great whitetail cartridge. I like the 140 grain bullets for most animals, shoots a bit flatter and retains velocity a bit better than the 160 grain RN. They won't penetrate as well as the 160 gr RN, but penetrate enough for my uses.

I've got several '96 Mausers. One is a straight M1896, have two M96/38s, and a straight M38. Also have a sportered M96/38, and an AG-42B Llungman.

Don't have a 6.5 of any caliber, but the Swede in a Tikka or Carl Gustaf sporterized mauser is on the "want" list.

Been considering it for use as a sporter weight varminter that would serve as a deer rifle as well.  Normally, I pack this 22-250 around when hunting varmints:

After a few winter trips after coyotes, unsuccessful I might add , I decided I needed to cover more turf and packing this heavy thing wasn't a lot of fun.  Besides, any reason to get a new rifle is a good reason.

While on the subject of favorite loads for the 6.5, does anybody use it for varmints?  I know at one time the 6.5/284 was a hot varmint caliber in some circles.

ive used mine on ground hogs from quite a distance without ever haveing a problem they shoot real flat and retain a ton of energy so inside of 100yrds it pretty much tears them to shreds

The old Swede has been a family tradition.I think about all My Uncles, most cousins,My Brothers,Grandfather all have or had various Swedish Mausers.I just picked up a Husqvarna Model 38 in very good condition. All original.I've only used 140 Gr bullets for hunting with the 6.5X55.Most of the Rifles we have used are Sporterized Carbines.I never felt undergunned with them. Can't wait to start playing with my new Model 38

Looking back in my load notes I found these loads that worked well in my 6.5X55, 140 gr Nosler Partition with 45 gr reloader 22,129 gr Hornady with 46 gr Reloader 22.Not sure what case but most likely Norma.I have used 30/06 and .270 winchester cases but had to reduce the load a grain or two.I tried a load with Winchester 760 powder and a Barnes 120 gr XLC.It was very inconsistant for some reason with extreme spread of over 130 fps in 5 rounds chronoed.

Glad to here Im not the only throwback with the Swede.

Had a m38 and it was a great gun but wore out.

Have had a Ruger m77 mkII for some time now and it will shoot a ragged hole hole at 100yds with 125gr Nosler partions and Ramshot Hunter powder.

In the process of working up a load with Ballistic tips but they are VERY persnickety with the Ruger. Was given 2 boxes so the only thing I'm out is powder and primer.

I use the 4831/140 gr Game King combo at about 2650 fps. Mine does not like the 120gr bullets , but will shoot the 140 into 3/4 " all day. I don't like to hot rod it as the 96 does not have a gas shroud on the bolt. I use Norma brass as with the .06 case size, the head is about .005 smaller as I recolect

I got mine years ago for $69. I cut the barrel off at the first step, and recrowned it, put a cock on opening convesion, Bhueler safety and Timney trigger. It sits in a Richards stock/ Harris Bipod and has  Luepold 6x on it. It has killed quite afew antelope

Mine will shot 140's all day long at 1 to 1 1/2 inchs but was given a large quantity 120 and 125 so using them till gone.

really have to be precise or groups open up real quick on lighter bullets.

Had a 96 with the straight bolt and enough wood to use as a4x4 post and them went to the M38 and had bolt tuned and scope mounts added, barrel crowned. but was just putting lipstick on a hog.

Barrel was wore slap out, wish I knew more at the time and put money into barrel first them the rest but was new at the rebuilding old surplus rifles.

Have 5 other rifles in everything from 223wssm to 30-06 but the Swede is the one that I always carry with the most confidence as to what it will do. not that they don't shot as well or even better, but it is like a favrite pair of boots that it just always fell right,                                  Muzz

The 38's were calvary rifles so they had the turned bolt. I guess it was to keep the bolt from digging into the back when horseback.

When I recieved mine, it looked like it was never issued or had a shot though it. No scrathes on the stock, action or what ever. Sure wish I hand't sportarized it . Might be worth more than a few bucks now. The3 8's were going for $39, and $49 for special selection back then.

Of course you could by an 03 for $12 from Montgomery Wards back in the 60's too

I just payed $199 for my model 38.Its in excellent condition.Bore is perfect but the stock shows sone dings. It shoots great.Shooting Remington 140 gr factory loads I was hitting a cantelope sized rock about 200 yards across a canyon yesterday. When I was a kid we all were looking for a model 38 to sporterize. Now that  finally have one I have no intentions of modifying it in any way.The old Swede was a family staple in those days.We all have at least one thats sporterized although almost all are Model 94's

My bolt rifles do best with either of the 4831s, currently using 4831 SC, and a 140 grain Spitzer. Don't try slower powders in an AG-42, though, you'll tear the crap out of cartridge rims, and launch the brass into orbit. My loads for that rifle are built around one of the 4895s. I suspect A-2520 would work well, too, but I haven't researched it much.

The bolt on my m38 was bent but not enough to clear scope I had on iy at the time. Have tried a few other powders over the years and so far Ramshot Hunter is the best for 140's and lighter. Would like to find another one day but have more than I can shoot now.

ahh the memories..like most say  a family staple sums it up real nice ! my first one i bought to  sporterize ,old  long 96...pretty wood underneath all them dings..think i gave 50-60 for it  worse problem was the bore was rougher than a alligators skin and it came with two boxes of norma ammo...biggest mistake was shootin it  lol iron sights and shoot  skeet stood up @ 100-200 yards all day long ( at least until i ran out of bullets ) couldnt bear to  change the barrel then and finally  traded it to a friend ... a few more have passed by and i note that tho it shoots the  light bullets -even the factory  light norma match - that it seems to prefer 120-140 grainers ,i use one for a loaner rifle now and another to take after elk, my choice load is  h 414 45 g.'s with rem 120's and  43g.'s with 140's ,i have used the nosler ballistic tips but actually prefer the remington core locks they're even cheaper and they hold together great on deer and elk( the light hollow points and ballistic tips were mureder on varmits ! )  happy shooting ( the best way to get empty brass)

I just started loading for my Husky M38, 129 Hornady SPs and 32.5 of Varget. Love the rifle. Need to find some brass for reasonable prices, I don't have much and what I have is PMC.

pmc works  as well as does some other factory loaded stuff (i got lucky a couple years ago when midway had a closeout on loaded norma match ammo  and bought all i could afford at the time) sellier&bellot has factory loads fairly reasonable that i pick up at  gun shows from time to time there's more ( like pvt.partisian etc) that are fairly reasonable $8-$12 a box loaded, it's loaded stateside by  winchester and remington avg $15+ a box ( or so ) and while i havent found empty rem brass ( one of my fav's after  norma brass) most company's (such as midwayusa.com or armsandammo.com etc) sell win brass, after years of being a quiet  seller the caliber seemed to catch on in the late 80's to early 90's and components are more available.

here's midway's link  to the brass page ..

http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=1&Categoryid=7370&categorystring=9315***652***670***9013***

it never hurts to shop around tho ,g'luck  !and happy shooting ( the best way to get empty brass)

Hornady 140 grain sp interlocks shoot under 1 inch at a hundred yards and are devastating on deer size game.I am using a custom model 38 with a new barrel and it's a super accurate gun.
