O.K. Sorry for the newbie question. I just bought a bolt rifle in .308 and I want to learn to handload. I've been calculating costs, as best I can, and searching didn't find an answer for how many times a case can be reused.

So, excluding most outlying variables, legal disclaimers, etc., what might be an average expectation for how many times I can reuse my brass for my Savage 10 FP 308?

The biggest equation is "How hot are you going to load them?"

I've had a lot of brass for my .308Win going on 10 years with case having been handloaded at least 40 times.  I do not load overly hot, and since the introduction of Varget....wow.  Cases do a lot of work, but using just my neck sizing die(and bumping the shoulder only when needed)....I'm not sure how long I can keep using them, but I have new cases(purchased five years ago) when I need them.

On average, you should get 10-15 loadings without issue.

I have some 22-250 cases (Remington) i have reloaded at least thirty times, using a mild load, and have not had a problem with them.

My R-P cases in .222Rem. have 27 reloads thus far, my Lapua cases, the batch of 20,I use for test-loads have been reloaded 19 times without any problems, but they are only neck sized and have got a slight shoulder bump at every 10 reloads.

Wow, that's incredible considering that, by my estimate, c. 50% of cost is the brass.

Thanks fellas.

Buy a good quality brass, take good care of it, do not shoot red-hot loads in your rifle because these will cause loose primer problems far before neck problems will occur.

Good does not always mean very expensive; The very expensive RWS brass is by far not a good as Lapua (My experience),and also has some differences in internal volume from lot to lot, which under certain conditions a safe powder charge in one case can transform into a dangerous one in another case from another lot.

I wish, I still could buy a 500 Lapua cases in .222Rem.; medium priced, top quality, but unfortunately totally sold out in Europe, because production has been discontinued.
