Hi Folks - Rick the Newbie here
I just received a Dillon 550B along with a RCBS Trimmer, a Dillon Swage 600 and alot of other stuff that USPS and FEDEX dropped off yesterday. I will be loading .223 and .308 that is mostly Military Surplus - I will have to deal with primer crimps.
The question I have is about sequencing and the Dillon 550B. Here is the sequence that I THINK will work.
1. Case Cleaning
2. Use the Dillon Sizing/Deprime die without loading primers to deprime and size. (is this possible?)
3. Use the Dillon Swage to clear all primer crimps.
4. Use the RCBS trimmer if necessary. I have the three way cutters so I don't think deburring will be necessary.
5. Set up the Dillon dies without the Deprime/Sizer die.
6. Insert primer in station 1 - without the Deprime/Sizer die (Is this possible?)
7. Use the normal Dillon setup for powder charging, seating and crimping.
I would appreciate your thoughts because "I never did this before"
Thanks guys
Rick

#2 is possible....just be sure not to push forward on the handle(will try to install the primer).
#6 not sure I'm following you here....what exactly are you trying to do again?
Following your sequence you should clean the cases, de-prime/re-size, pull case out and swag primer pocket, re-install case in same position and install the primer, turn tool plate to next station, and repeat until your out of components or finished loading.
Scott (hope this answers what your trying) B

| In #6 I am trying to insert the primer without having to use the deprime/sizing die again (along with another re-lube).

#2 is possible, just don't fill the primer magazine.
#4. I've never seen a cutter that doesn't require deburring, at least to break the edge.
#6 you can always remove the sizing die. Just cycle the case up thru the mounting hole, and use Dillon's priming sequence. You can use a sized case as a gage to reinstall the die later.
More money, but with what you are trying to do, it might be easier to buy a single stage press just to size/deprime.

The Dillon 550B installs the primer with a forward stroke, so the die body does not contact the case during this part of the operation. Just don't do the forward stroke during the sizing stroke, work your case then you can install case back into the same station. Install the primer and move on to the next.
Scott (I love Dillon presses) B

What you want to do is possible. What I would do though is I would put the sizer die in its own tool head. Then with the other tool head with the other dies I would put a universal decapping die in place of the sizer die. If you clean your brass with a tumbler that way it well insure that there is no media in the primer pocket. If you have a lot of brass to do and if you have the money I would get the Dillon case trimmer. That way you could size and trim the cases at the same time.
