<cracks nuckles>

Actually just got done with a pet project of mine.
I just accquired a new AR-15 DPMS 223/5.56 that I am testing some new loads for.

A) Case: Various Military lot
Boolit: 55 Gr. FMJ Armscor (Graf and Sons have em on sale for 40.80 for 500)
    Primer: Winchester Small Rifle
    Powder: 1st load - 250 rounds Alliant Reloader 7. 20.5 Gr. approx. 3,000 FPS
2nd load- Dunno yet  I am thinking of Hodgons H335 or BL(C)2 whatcha think?
I am trying to come up with a plinking load, this rifle is for my son and he just likes to shoot cans and such. Anyone have a "pet" load they like for 55 Gr. boolits?

Ok now that I have deviated from the original topic here is the calibers I load for:

Shotgun:
12 Ga - Skeet, Trap, Pheasant Hunting
20 Ga- Skeet. sporting clays, quail hunting
410 Ga- Skeet, rabbit and squirell hunting
I dont reload for slugs or duck hunting loads I only use about 10 rounds of slugs (Sighting in and deer hunting. Cant use a rifle in Illinois)  and 25 rounds for duck. I just bought alot of it when it was on sale many years ago and still use it today.

Pistol:
9MM Luger: Target loads
38Spl/357 Mag- Target loads
45 ACP- Target Loads
357 Maximum - T/C Target loads
41 Magnum - Target loads
44 Magnum - Target loads
445 Gates aka 445 super magnum - T/C Target loads
7-30 Waters - T/C target loads

Rifle:
223 Rem. / 5.56- Plinking, Target loads
22-250 - Long range target. Varmint Hunting loads
243 Winchester - Dad's favorite caliber for target and deer hunting.
264 Winchester Magnum - Brothers favorite caliber for target and Hunting
7MM Remington Magnum - Target and hunting loads
300 Winchester Magnum - Dad's Go To caliber for North american big game
350 Remington Magnum - My favorite Go To caliber for Bear hunting in Canada.
45/70 Goverment - My Favorite Sharps rifle caliber

458 Winchester Magnum - Dad got this gun for a African Safari he went on back in the 70's I still have ammo he loaded for it, he shot maybe 5 rounds a year. I have never loaded for it. Honestly Its a beast to shoot. :kickinnuts: but have all the components and dies for it.

30-06 Springfield - Target loads, Hunting loads, Competition loads
308 Winchester - Target loads, Hunting loads, Competition loads
303 British - Target loads, Hunting loads
7x57 Mauser- Target loads, Hunting loads (My favorite caliber)
8MM Mauser - Target loads

I load for friends and family so I do load for a few other calibers I cant think of atm.

well... going from memory here... these are ones i currently load for:

223 bolt gun
223 auto-loader
22-250 rem
243 win
6mm rem
257 rob
25-06 rem
264 win mag
270 win
7-08 rem
7 rem mag
7 rum
30 carbine (revolver and usgi carbine)
30-30 win
300 savage
308 win
30-06 springfield
300 wsm
300 win mag
300 rum
323 mauser (aka 8x57 mauser)
338 win mag
375 h&h

38 special
357 mag
9mm parabellum
40 s&w
10mm auto
41 rem mag
45 acp
480 ruger

and i think that about covers it. i don't currently load for shotguns, but i was very close to taking that on at one time. i wouldn't say it is out of the question, but it isn't real high on my list of time suckers to take on, either.

btw... i just wrapped up load development for the 7 rum on saturday. my old load used rl-25 and i was satisfied w/ it, but i tried some retumbo anyway, and now i am far more than merely satisfied! only complaint w/ the rum cases is you will have to dig deep to find a powder that will allow for a full enough case to not get any rattle. still... i am a big fan of the rum case, and as soon as possible i look forward to adding the 338-300 rum to the stable.

I haven't seen anyone with a .41 AE in years! Guess the .40 S&W did really kill it off.

I figure you are talking about the original 9x18 Ultra? Another one of Goering's idiotic ideas, There were some surplus Walther PPs still listed for sale at a wholesaler not too long ago, maybe five years. GECO still cataloged the cartridge last time I looked. I imagine CH4D has dies, and I think 9x19 brass could be trimmed down and reformed- I've made 9x18 Makarov brass that way a few times.

Charley,

I trimmed the rim down to meet the rebated spec for the Ultra, I have seen a few of the PP Supers lately, that was the Walther from the early 70s in the Ultra round, I think it was supposed to be a police type of pistol.

The 41 AE is a formidable round in a Hi Power with the conversion kit. I like the 41 AE, which I currently have some ammo up for sale, over the 40 S&W because of it's power, but it is not has brutal as the 10mm Auto can be.  It does beat the 9mmP round hands down for power, that is just my opion.

jjb2,

This comes from the love of the sport and many years of experience. I cast the bulk of my bullets for both rifle and pistol, plus Round Ball and Mini/Maxi Balls. It has talken me years to build up my reloading bench, I still have dies and bullets for cartridges that I don't shoot any more. If any one shoots .348 I have a box of 200 gr FPs that I am willing to trade.  Plus I have a large bunch of molds for casting, probably about 70 or more.

I still buy commercial or factory made bullets and cartridges, but those are for special purposes. But I could not afford to shoot as much as I do, unless I reload my own.

There are many examples of cost factors and increase in accuracy from loading your own. One of my rifles in 300 RUM, takes loads that are in 90 to 95 grains of powder range, that is about 70 cartridges per pound of powder, but the factory ammo is in the $60 to $70 for a box of 20. A pound of pound is about $25, box of primers is $3.50 or so and  Sierra Match kings that are $30 for a hundred bullets. These prices are just for example, but close to what I pay. So it is about $60 to reload the 70 rounds, plus I will have some bullets and primers left over. This is one cartridge where cast bullets are not appropriate for, even thou I have cast some from Lino and got the speeds up to 3,000 fps. The problem is that my bullets tends to break up in flight. So I use factory made bullets.

Reloading is a sport in itself and it gives you something to do to keep you off the streets.

Jerry

My handloading setup is the accumulation of a lot of years, and a lot of dealing. Both my Dillons were used, as was a lubrisizer, powder trickler, electronic scale, RCBS case prep machine, and a bunch of other stuff. Bullet molds were often closeouts, sales, etc. Was given a MEC 600 Jr in 12 gauge, with a conversion set for 20 gauge. You have to look for deals!

I've given away tools and equipment that I upgraded away from to beginers, just as many gave me tools they had no use for anymore.

If at all possible, I want to have the means to load for every firearm I own.

Handloading is also fun.

Charley,

I do what you do with my stuff that I have replaced, help out a beginner. They are always happy and I don't have to find another place to store things.

I use two of those roll around tool cabinets to store my dies in, along with shell plates, shell holders and other related things.
