Cast 45 balls, and a bullet that Dad made the mold for.

(kinda looked like a modified wadcutter.)

Used 1/2" plastic water pipe for the quick loads.

Made osage orange plugs on the lathe for the powder end.

Younger brother and woodchuck thought it was "funny" that he borrowed some powder from my loads!

Ball just bounced across field.

We weren't allowed to have bb guns as kids's, as we might hurt someone.

22's, shotguns, and blackpowder were ok though.

Hello   I started with the 264Win I bought from Gander Mt. in 1964 have never shot anything but reloads since first experience was with a Lee classic 10 gauge reloader a friend had we would reload 2 boxes and go out and shoot clay pidgons and reload them and do it all over again those were the days red dot for $1,15 a pound in your old container bulk.  don't remember the price of lead but it was cheap. First 6.5mm 100grains were 3.50 a box.
                          Thanks for the memories

222 AND 22-250 BACK ABOUT 1973 OR 4  38 spl first pistol. Started out on a Lee loader , still have the 222 loader and the plastic hammer we used to load with. Powder , bullets , primers and brass was cheap. We shot a lot of bullets down range back then.

I load for around 25 calibers now .

7.62 X 54R. Norma made the only ammo available in the 1970s. It was the princely sum of $14 a box. The only rifle I had at the time. I had over 100 cases so I borrowed a press and tools, purchased dies and components and went to town. RD

Also started loading .38Sp for my service revolver (Model 10) in 1988.  Rockchucker & Speer #11.

Had nobody to teach me -- everybody thought it was odd to reload and Gore hadn't invented the Internet yet.

Wore out 3-4 kinetic pullers first few years.  lol

First reloads were in 1975 for 38/357 in a S&W Model 28 (Highway Patrollman) that I bought in El Paso in 1973 (which I still have).

Lost my handloading cherry to 12 gauge shotshells, with a Lee Loader, back in 1965. For handguns, it was .38/.357 in 1982. Rifles: .30-'06, around 1985.

Started reloading shot shell about 10 or 11 years ago and one year ago I bought my first varmint rifle in .223 and bought the Lee Challenger press kit and the dies to load with. Couldn't believe how accurate I could load over bought ammo. Last fall I bought a .454 Casull and since I am able to shoot the .45 Colt from this gun I didn't waste time and bought the dies to load them also. The Colt ammo I mainly did this to save money because I can load for a fourth the cost, but the .223 I did for accuracy. It is fun being able to shoot something that I put together.

Dean.

First Load was just the other day and it was 45 ACP.  The first shot was scary and very exciting.  I feel in love.

40 years ago.  20 guage shells with a Lee Pocket loader.  Back then, just to save a few bucks.  Lots of different calibers since.

You know it was so long ago, and I don't know how many millions of rounds, but I truly don't remember, but most likely 30-06 or 45ACP.

My first was a 7.7 Jap, I reloaded almost out of necessitiy. That stuff was hard to find and pretty pricey. That was around 73' or 74' I think if memory serves me correctly. I had helped a friend of the family with his reloading prior to that. The time he spent teaching me helped me to decide to buy that Jap 7.7.  No longer afraid to buy an odd ball caliber because of knowing I could reload for pennies on the dollar. The gun was a nicely done sporter and in exceptionally nice shape, excluding the lose of originaity. Still have it and still shoot it.
