Hello All - This is my first post and needless to say I am excited to pick the brains of knowledgeable re-loaders.  I am new at reloading.  I loaded up some Hornady 150 gr and shot a couple of 1" groups.  My question is - I am reloading another group of bullets using Hornady 165 SST (long Ogive).  I checked the bullet seat depth and measured a depth of 3.361 (bolt face to bullet/land contact).  The max COL for my .300 Win Mag is 3.340.  With that - I am questioning whether a jump space of .021 is excessive.  The jump space on my 150 gr. bullets is only .004.:confused:

0.020" is considered to be reasonably safe and accurate.  Hornady OAG gauge recommends between 0.020" - 0.040" in their manual.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to the HB.

Different bullets in different guns like different spacing. I shoot a lot of Barnes bullets and Barnes recommends from .030 to .070 off the lands. You will just have to experiment with your rifle and the bullets that you like to see what performs best for you.

I take it you're using an OAL gauge & bullet comparator, such as the Stoney Point/Hornady to check the distance from the lands?

The SST does indeed need to be seated further out than most other bullets - to an unacceptable amount in one .270 I load for.
Nosler Partitions load just fine at a reasonable OAL in the same rifle.
