Aside from looking good what is the benafit of geting a sparkle brite finish on our brass?.After all, if it is whiped clean, what,if any benifits do you get from shinie brass?.

A lot of us cant afford,or dont have the room for all the stuff that a lot of you have.

Besides better and more accareat ammo,a lot of us cant afford buying store bought ammo.Adding tumblers and such,is it really nessary???.thanks pan.

good question.i have been handloadin since the early seventies.never needed a polisher.borrowed one from my sister after my retired marine brother-in-law passed away.the only real advantage i can see is ejected brass that has a shine is a heckuva lot easier to find in the fall grass.tumbling, does little if anything at all to the inside of the case.it doesnt do much for primer pockets either.i used an ultrasonic cleaner with detergent for years.it cleaned the cases from the build up crud in the primer pockets and made the cases squeaky clean, but it didnt shine them.a good primer pocket cleaning tool followed by a cleaning of the outside to ensure a grit free case is all that is needed.there are many ways to clean the outside of the case.the easiest is to have the wife do them with the silverware in the sink.

Pan, I've been loading for 20+ years. I got my first tumbler 2 years ago when I started higher volume loading of .223 and scrounging range brass on a regular basis. For years I just wiped them down with a rag prior to lubing and wiped the lube off after sizing. If they were really dirty I held a light duty scotch brite pad against the and lightly polished them with my lee case trimmer in an elecric drill after I trimmed them. There are also cleaners that you can add to water to soak cases for cleaning that work well too. As well as some home brew water based cleaners that work well. There is a thread on here somewhere that discusses the home brew cleaners. Bottom line... You don't want them dirty enough to scratch your dies or stick in your rifle chamber. Other than that it's all personal preference. RD

Was thinking about your question this morning.

free cases from unknown.

throw em in, and see if they are any good.

cheaper than an ultrasonic, and we know Weez's broke;)

need to figure out how to get all the mud out first...

thanks guys.

I reloaded a long time before I ever got a tumbler. Have one now, but my ammo doesn't shoot any better--just looks better.

Makes your dies last longer if you tumble before sizing.

It is easier to get sizing lube off your cases in big batches

Imperfections such as neck splits and cracks in head  are easier to see with clean cases.

If you shoot a lot of semi auto handgun where your cases get a lot of crud on them from the ground, it's the easiest way to get it all off.

I tumble my brass in crushed walnut shells that I buy at the big chain pet supply supply stores. I use the larger Dillon tumbler, but have the smaller one also. In the big one, along with the walnut shell media, I put in about an inch or so of Flitz from the tube.

Tumble for a bit, they come out nice and sparkling.

tumblers are not that expensive anymore and you can use crushed wall nut shells from your pet store with some chrome polish added to shine them up.. throw a few cut up dryer sheets in to keep the dust down and they look great when they come out..

I do like shiney brass but tumble more to get all the resizing lube and stuff off.. so it dont mess with the pressures, especially when using scavanged brass.. i like to take a good look at them before i use them

My hands still get dirty when messing with polished brass though.. does anyone wipe their brass down after tumbleing to get them really shiney..

As for the original question, as long as they are not muddy or sticky they will fire fine. my uncle has reloaded for 30 plus years and seldom polishes unless they are real bad, and then only until he gets the crud off.. but they always shoot straight.

Sometimes I run my brass thru a second tumbling without the polish to get the residue off the brass. Plus I use corn cob coarse ground from the feed store to get the gunk off the brass, then throw the corn cob away after 3 or 4 uses. The coarse ground corn cob is more absorbent, but does not polish as well as the fine ground corn cob or the walnut shell.

I'd look at Wiedner's in Tennesee. They seem to always have decent prices

You can build a tumbler with an old bucket and a motor that maybe laying around. With those two items and thought, you build a vibrating tumbler or a drum tumbler.

If I need to do a large amount, we are talking huge amount, I would use a cement mixer, filled with crushed walnut shells, and a some flitz. That should give an idea on how simple this machine can be.

Mr. Lee (of Lee Precision, mass marketer of reloading tools) says in his latest manual that he has never noticed a difference at all between cleaned and uncleaned brass.  I'm sure he's reloaded as much as anyone, with extensive tests on performance.  I'm also sure that Lee doesn't offer a tumbler for sale. Everything he does make though, is esscential and the best (according to him).

I'm willing to accept his postion, except for truly dirty brass.

But..., I still polish all my brass extensively. Sometimes before and after decapping/sizing.  It's one of my favorite parts of the hobby.  (Yes, I consider reloading a hobby unto itself).  Taking tarnished throwaways and making them into shiny bobbles!   oooooouuuuuu, ssshhiiiinnnneeee!    It's also a great time to inspect and sort every case as I fish them out of the tumbler one by one.  I'm sure I'm over doing it for target rounds, but I do enjoy it (despite my wife's nagging about the noise and the mess).

Absolutely nesseccary?   Probably not...but really neat!
