What would be nice is if the industry got together and produced a manual for all propellant and known loads, and a manual for external ballistics of all bullet makers. They then could publish yearly updates that could be added to said manuals. Wishfull thinking though. The Lee manual is my only one I have. I use a ballistics program for all my projectiles, all I need to find out is the bullets bc and lenght, my program then figures out all external ballistic that I need to know Last edited on Sun Jan 25th, 2009 01:30 AM by RouteClearence

If i were to use only one loading book it would be the Lyman reloading book .The reason is because Lyman have no dogs in the fight they don't sell/make powder or primers or bullets nore brass .Its been around longer than I have and probely most of you .The guy there is Tom and Tom knows his stuff hes been there a long long time and he;s not that old .It may not have the lots info you need to shoot some huge bullets in your ar but it got what you need if you only get one shot at it

In general, I go to my Lyman 48th first & then cross check against my Speer 13th or one of the propellant manufacturers' booklets.
I won't rely on a single source, as even experts can screw up, or the printer makes a typographical error.
I use Hodgdon's online load stuff a lot, as I use their powders in the main.

I have a Lyman 49th edition and a bunch of others, I use them all, plus I take a lot of notes on my loading and how they perform.
I still keep old reloading manuals around, the powder information may be out of day, but other things, like dimensions or even that the cartridge exits can be found in these old manuals.
The best thing is to have a several reloading manuals, some are bullet specific, some are powder specific and others like the Lyman is a handy well rounded manual especially if you shoot a lot CBs.

Recoil,
I would agree with you, except that all reloaders should be taking notes on thier loads. It's really simple and better than trying to remember.

I agree 100% Jerry. Reloading is very much a "thinking man's game" and good records are of great value

A fellow I know came out to use my range to try out his BLR in .270. Out of 20 rounds, he had 5 pierced primers, 4 failures to fire, had to use both hands to open the action. Shot 5 inch groups. I asked him what powder he was using, and how much. He said " I don't remember, I don't write any thing down". Sent him home. Later heard he has ruined two rifles.

Years ago I think I used "Handloading" published by the NRA for most of my needs back then.
Now, I think I go to my Lyman most.
I do like the online Hodgdon data site. They have many loads there.
I am trying some Sierra bullets in a couple of calibers sooooooo.......been thinking maybe it is time for their new one. (good excuse for a new book).
I have a couple of Speer, some of the little single caliber booklets, the new Lee book (I like it also), the Hodgdon annual .......guess it is addictive!!
Have a good one , Guy

just one ? thaz like havin just one bullet umm leaded or unleaded? and yes it matters..... while i agree that the lyman's used ta be the champ sadly that has changed ( unless by one u mean every issue lolz ) the older lyman's are fantastic ! wildcats ,cast boolits etc etc ... the new lyman's seem to be more and more umm current crop and old solid fav's and thaz about it ,the sierra's ( are one for both pistol and rifle now ) are pretty decent but ....go ahead and find the 375 jdj in there [dratz] speer is decent as well is the hodgdon but even if they only use their bullets i have to pick the hornady ,they have about more wildcats than anyone plus the ol stndby's as well as the newer crop of stuff ( now if they just have more cast boolits lolz

Sierra. Their data has been spot on for several loads I have tried. Also I shoot a lot of SMKs, so it's the one I reference the most.

I am just getting back into reloading after having been out of it for many years....Lots of new stuff out there. Very exciting, it is almost like starting out as a newbie, but better. I am looking forward to the long cold winter , so I won't feel guilty about sitting inside reloading....lol

Guess I like azcruiser's answer above about Lyman not having any dogs in the fight. But, you are right......about many books and no bad ones.....I read about calibers I have never shot and probably never will. I just like see the data.

"IF YOU COULD ONLY HAVE 1 MANUAL..."
That's a hypothetical question based on a flawed premise, IMHO. Since we CAN have more than one, and most of us get a LOT more than one, what difference does that make to anyone? It's just belly button contemplation!

I'v been at this a long time and have perhaps two dozen, likely more. For noobs, I recommend Lyman as the first, any of them afterwards. All are good, none are duplicates and each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.
My own hypothetical is, "What if there were no hypthetical questions?"

Well, hypothetically speaking....we wouldn't have any hypothetical answers......
