I am curious.....I didn't see where anyone mentioned Ken Water's "Pet Loads". Does anyone have/use a copy?

I shoot the vast majority Hornady bullet's so that's the one I would have. I would also have my P.O. Ackley books, I don't find any use as loading refrence in them but they are great books. My girl friend woulf have the Nolser manual, my son Hodgdons, my grand daughter Speer, ect, ect, ect. Last edited on Tue Sep 29th, 2009 04:40 PM by Don Fischer

My favorite is a toss-up between the Lyman and the Lee.... with the nod going to Lyman. As many Sierra bullets as I shoot, I should (and will) get their notebook manual.

I use a variety of sources - no one source has ever had all the data for every caliber I load - whether for powder, bullets, etc.
I use the Lee load data from the die sets, Hodgdon online data, and the various 'one caliber' load books I collected from Sportsman's Warehouse before they folded. I also use data from the various online forums and reloading sites, but verify by cross-checking. Some data I have found there (someone's "pet" load) was more than a smidge HOT!
I add the data I find to my own big loose-leaf binder, broken down by caliber. Another section has just those loads I actually use or have used, along with pertinent notes. It's my 'bible' for loading.

It's quite expensive so few of us have one. Of those few who do, it's not a "favorite" of many.

That is what I wondered. Just because they are his pet loads......maybe not others. I keep looking at it online, but have resisted so far. Thanks for the info, Guy

I have many manuals, I use the Lyman as a starting point. Other than published manuals and the Internet services, I keep my own notes on almost all of my loads. Those are best manuals.

Cyberguy,
I have the Hornady #1 Edition..... a tad outdated (someone gave it to me) but still nice. Doesn;t get used as much as Lyman and Lee.
The Hodgdon manual you listed (for $7.99) is an annual "magazine". It's a nice one to have because there are nice articles in there, and the load data isn;t bad either. Hodgdon, like most other powder mfrs, puts out free pamphlets with reload data that you can pick up at your gun shop or order from them online. They're good to have - I don;t often pass them up.
And.... Jerry's right - notes are essential. In fact, when it's time to reload, I turn first to my spreadsheets before I look in the manual (all of the loads originated in manuals anyway). I made up an Excel spreadsheet that tracks all the calibers I reload, every bullet I reload, and the results of each. I also list "Best Loads" for each bullet weight and make. While I may take alot of handnotes at the range, all of it eventually gets inputted into the spreadsheet.

Hey stretch...good info.
I used to reload many years ago but lost most of my fav loads, etc.
So with new powders and some new calibers in my collection of iron...it is like being a newbie.
I actually bought a computer program that not only can keep track of your loads but it can do other things as well. I thought about doing an access data base but found this program "shoot v3.2" It can calculate bullet drop etc based on the load data. I am going to try using it.

Lyman/Hodgdon tossup. I have 2 others plus I buy Hodgdon annual manual each year. I have a Speer but the only thing I like about it is the Ballistic tables in the back.
My dis like is it has data for only 3 cal's that I load for. 303,308 and 8x57.
I have 3 other cal's it doesn't list.
Lyman and Lee list all my cal's
I also have 7 th edition of Hodgdon
You see, I can't vote.

Cyberguy,
Where did you get that shoot v3.2? I have some memory of that...somewhere in this cobwebed brain of mine. How much is it? I'd like to try a dedicated program if it doesn;t cost a fortune.

Yep, That is the one. I got it about a year and a half ago.
I have only played with it. I have not used it in a real situation yet. So, I can not honestly comment on how it works. Only that it looked good enough for me to buy it .
Have a good one , Guy

Because of computer failures and all of that I still write my data down. WE lost the shop computer a couple of months ago. Because we back everything up daily, we only lost maybe 6 hours of work and data.
But if I want read my reloading data in the necessary room, I can take a book. Our only laptop isn't running windows. BTW we are wireless.

Jerry,
You are correct on both counts.
But, Shoot has the capability of letting you print any or all the loads you have stored. You can then keep them in a loose leaf binder to take with you "on the GO".
It also has a back-up/restore system in it.
I have not used it much , as i said earlier, but it looks like he has thought of a lot of the issues we have. Plus you can actually email the author of the software and ask questions. That I have done and he got back to me in a couple of days with a great explanation .
Have a good one, Guy
