I am very interested in starting to reload for my son and I!
My son is 37 years old and currently has 8 rifles (including his & his wifes, and the grandsons) He also has 4 pistols. Every gun is a different caliber
What is the best name in reload equipment, in order of quality and ease of use?
1. Lyman
2. Redding
3. RCBS
4. Lee
5. Hornady
etc

quality - probably dillon, as has been said.
customer service - RCBS
affordability/value - lee (do the research)
ease of use - lee (if you don't believe me, see the case trimmer)
my own choice is lee, but that it is because it is good for my situation in terms of what i do and can afford and so on. i know many here with RCBS equipment that wouldn't trade it for the world, also hornady, dillion, lyman, redding and all of them. any of it is good, or it wouldn't be for sale. matching it to what you can afford and what you actually need is a different story.
one helpful thing is to go to http://www.midwayusa.com and compare the products there. you can also read reviews that have a lot of helpful information to help you make an informed decision.

Go on http://www.midwayusa.com and http://www.ebay.com for new presses & get the prices then go to ebay and look for used reloading presses.I was just on a forum with a member selling a Dillon XL650 for $650 but Dillon Precision has new ones for $529.95 it pays to do research before buying!I bought a friend a brand new dillon RL550B for $350 with a caliber conversion kit but added a few items like a strong mount plus powder dies,I included 41mag dies, shellplate, etc plus new rem 41mag brass loaded ammo and jacketed bullets. If you're seeking LEE there is a site my neighbor used from LEE that has discounted prices if you're serious I'll get the info from him how to order & save you some floose.(north african french word for money) Last edited on Tue Mar 3rd, 2009 06:30 AM by sako06

There isn't any bad equipment on the market now that I am aware of, all will do the job. Dillon for volume, Lee for price, Redding and RCBS for the name. I've got equipment from all of them, it all works.

rcbs dominates my reloading bench. presses, dies, trimmers, scales, various case prep tools. after that, i guess i have alot of lee dies. then to a smaller extent, a pretty equal mix of redding, forster & hornady.
if i were looking to set up a bench all over again, i'd do it the same way and go rcbs. it just what i've used and come to trust.
good luck to ya setting up your bench. korey

Man this question is just loaded for starting a flaming war.......probably won't happen on this forum, but on other forums we might see everybodies bad side. It's like the which is better poll; ford, chevy, or dodge? You'll find people loyal to all the brands. And rightly so.
For me it's always been price and availablitiy. Look at the pic's of my man cave and you'll see a smargasboard of reloading equiptment brands. Some people like to bash the lee brand because it's affordable, they would call it cheap. You know what? The darn stuff works. There isn't a brand out there I haven'e tried and owned. And you know what? It all works. So spend your money the way you want. I prefer spending it on components rather than equiptment.
The only place I'll encourage you to spend a little extra is on a good single press. It's the workhorse when reloading. Even if you move up to a progressive you'll still use it. So it's not like you're going to be throwing away money on it. And before you ask, they all make a good press.

I 100% agree with Charley. I think you would struggle to find any "bad equipment" on the market. It all becomes an issue of price and personal preference. The best advice when getting started is KISS. I started out many years ago with the Lee hand loader because (I'm Cheap) I wanted to see if I would like reloading. Although time consuming it gave me a good strong foundation in the fundamentals that have helped me along these many years. Not to get off topic but how many of you guy's have ever used one?

Lee is a good place to start - good performance for the money.
I have two Lee presses, the O-style single stage and the Turret Press. My handgun dies are all Lee, but I switched to RCBS rifle dies after having some problems with the Lee .30-30 dies. Most accessories are Lee, with a few RCBS items.
I don't do high volume, so this works for me. I am setting up a turret for each caliber I load - makes the setup much quicker and easier. I'm sure the other companies have similar gear.
If I expand, I'll probably go to an RCBS press. But that will be awhile.

I am using a Pacfic press(Hornandy) RCBS dies in 300 Win Mag and 270 WSM, I have Hornandy dies in 22-250 and .243. I have a Dillion tumbler, RCBS Powder Charge 1500, Frankfod Arsenal calipers.
So far it all works good for me. I dii have an issue with my dies from Hornandy but that was cleared up. Customer service was great!

Old Fart speaks true, despite the fact his barrel is bent.
I would encourage a newbie to get a single stage press first, like an RCBS Rockchucker or one of the many other excellent tools out there. You may someday want, or think you need, a progressive like the Dillon, but the single-stage press will always be useful. I have three presses on my bench: a Dillon, a Rockchucker, and an oldie-but-goody CH Magnum. They all get used and I wouldn't want to be without any one of them.
But learn the craft on a single-stage. Just my dos centavos.

Thats all I have been using. So far it seems like a good way for someone to dabble around to see if they like reloading. It is very easy to use and portable. I recommend everyone have one for their main hunting bolt gun.
