For me casting season is nearly here. I'll be really busy. I intend to cast some rounds for my .45ACP. I'm wondering is can I use moly to lube them? The only other lube that I have is liquid Alox (sp?). The weapon that I'll be using them in is a 1911. Thanks folks.

I guess that would help. I have almost no lubing equipment save only plastic containers and ziploc bags. The bullet is 200gr. round flat nose. I was using them for .45LC. I know that there are better bullets for use in the .45ACP. However, this is what I have to work with for now.

Never tried moly or a liquid alox. You've got me over a barrel on those two.
Used to shoot IPSC back when my antlers were still in velvet. I cast my own 185 grain and 230 grain .45 slugs for that and used an RCBS lube/sizer with RCBS green lube sticks (they smell like they're about 90% beeswax). The lube/sizer gave good service, made the bullets nice and round and true to size. The green waxy lube worked OK - kinda smokey, but did what it was hired to do.
I've heard there's better lubes around than the green beeswax, but I still have several sticks of it to use up before I leave that reservation. Still have the RCBS lube/sizer mounted on my bench - use it once in a while to fill in the grease grooves when I come up with a factory cast bullet that didn't get lubed before it went into the box (usually 2 or 3 out of a box of 500). It still works just fine after 25 years. Only maintenance I ever had to do was replace an O-ring on the plunger about 10 years ago.
Bottom line - there's a number of cast bullet pistol lubes out there by Lee, RCBS, and other manufacturers. Any of them should do the business for you. You might want to try more than one and see which you like the best.

PLastic containers and ziplocks pretty much limit you to LLA (Lee Liquid Alox). You could handlube with a grease type lube, but it is slow and messy. LLA works well, will do a good job at .45 ACP velocities.

I normally use my Star sizer, but also do the TL thing. I shoot a lot of Ranch Dog bullets for the Marlin line of rifles.
RD posted his method for Tumble Lubing, using the Lee Sizer system. I have done this on my own with a great deal of success.

You can get every thing at Midway, except the Xlox, you find that at: http://www.lsstuff.com/lube/liquid-x.html
This is a simple method, take a little time to build up a rhythm, but you can do 300 to 400 an hour with this method, just have to let the bullets stand over night before sizing and putting the powdered Mica on them.

if you cut the lla in half with mineral spirits and use a bout a quarter as much as yyyou think you need it works much better.
you can then use johnsons paste wax [yes the floor wax] as a second coat same thing about a quarter of what you think you need.
let both coats dry for a day or two.
if you put them in a little see through plastic cup and swirl them around and asround like a tilt a whirl you can fill the lube grooves pretty well.

if you going to use JPW, Johnson Paste Wax, just use some household type of paraffin, that is the main ingredient in JPW, after the solvents. There is very little Carnuba wax in JPW.

Here's a picture of the round. I don't have the box or mould handy. (The line has nothing to do with my question).Attachment: Pic415.JPG (Downloaded 40 times) Last edited on Sat Mar 7th, 2009 04:44 PM by sharps74

The lower groove is the lube groove and the upper is the crimp ring.

If anyone is interested in Carnauba wax or beeswax, I buy it from "texasnaturalsupply.com, the Carnauba is in flakes and the beeswax is in small pellets.

with that bullet, pan lubing would work good.if they chamber as cast dont worry about sizing either.

Do you not think the Alox would work? I'm not all that familar with using cast lead bullets in my 1911.

Alox and Xlox will work in 1911s. I have shot many pan lubed bullets thru different 45s that I have owned.
There are many issues here and mostly the issue should be what type of shooting do you do, how much money do you want to spend on bullet lubing and does you 1911 like .451 or .452 or .453 or as cast?
For myself, I like the consistancy that I get out of using my Star, but I do use the Lee Sizer system with ALOX lube on many bullets that I cast.

the solvents in the jpw is what makes it do the light coating you need .
i have used 4 parts jpw to 1 part alox/ bees wax[melted in a microwave] to shoot in my 30-30 up to 2200 fps.
not my everyday lube but it does the job when i don't have, or want to size a boolit.

I have a really slick formula for this sort of lube, half and half Alox/beeswax, then a little Carnuba. I have used this for the pan lubing method. It is very hard and adheres to the bullet well.

I'll see about getting a slug sample from it. I'm sure I have one.
