Well I might as well get this boat in the water and see if it floats or sinks. Just for clarification I'm not a doctor and no I don't play one on tv either. I am however a EMT so this is a topic that I know a little about, but we all need to do our part. If you are a RN, Medic, EMT or Doctor jump in and lets work on keeping all our buddies here and everywhere alive to see the next hunting season.
As most all of us know mother nature is neutral to us she won't go out of her way to kill us, but, on the other hand she won't save us either. What it comes down to is US. Hunting season is in full swing for everyone and while we as hunters have done everything from double check our guns to shower with the scent killing soap and pray to the hunting gods that we nail our limit or that 16 point buck, there remains one thing that most of us have neglected... Our health.
Lets face it most of us don't get enough exercise in general let alone the 30 minutes of cardio that we need most. Then with hunting season upon us we load the guns, dogs and hunter orange and run out in the fields chasing deer, dove pheasant and stress our out of shape bodies to the max. Then we wonder why we feel so tired and exhausted at the end of the day???
Since we cant go into how to get into shape at this point lets deal with what we can.
Don't eat a heavy meal in the morning: your body is going to be trying to digest it and with you getting out and running thru fields afterwards your body will either reject it or put more stress on itself trying to filter it.
Do: eat a meal thats balanced. go light or moderate on the heavy carbs like grits, biscuts, gravy, pancakes etc. Eat fruit with some of those pancakes it will provide some quick sugars and provide a nice balance.
Don't: drink a ton of coffee it makes jitters which can mean misses and more importantly you will have all those nice warm clothes on and when ya get out in the cold and wind you now have to get thru all those clothes to relieve yourself which also defeats the purpose of that scent killing soap you bathed in.
Do: drink fluids during the day or you will dehydrate yourself which puts you at risk for severe problems.
Lastly if you feel tired take a rest if you feel faint or get shortness of breath get medical help immediately. Our goal is to enjoy the great outdoors not get buried in it.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

Poacher, I'm definitely in on this one. Before my recent hunting season I was riding my bike, and walking my dog in some hilly areas. Just to make sure I could handle the rigors of hiking up and down hills carrying a rifle and gear. It paid off.
There were mornings so cold I'd wear two layers of long johns, hike up hills, and then get so warm I'd want to strip it all off. I was burning up. I re-learned real quick to go real slow on the uphill sections. That's easy to do. Just walk up the hill slowly and keep looking around. There's some neat things to see in the forest. I always had a small bottle of water to drink from. ALWAYS TAKE SOME WATER. Even a small amount. You can overdo it real easy, without knowing it until it's too late.
I'm an ex-marathon runner who's now a multi-pack smoker. (An on again, off again smoker since my teen years.) I know in shape and out of shape. Stay in shape and you'll be able to hunt with anyone out there...
There's no better sport in the world than hunting.

The boats floatin!!!!
Thnx Doc, TG. appreciate it. only problem is I got all these damn buttons now just when I was starting to learn the two or so I had already. That being said.
Gunrunner tis better to wear too many clothes than not enuf. you can always strip down but ya can't add what you don't have with you. I agree with you as well on the water thing. You can never carry too much water. The sports drinks are good but if you aren't sweating real heavy you don't need all that sodium. Water is perfect. It filters out so much and doesn't raise your blood pressure.
Take care Be safe Poacher.
