This may be a bold statement, but it's my opinion anyways. Shotguns are used exclusively to take all manner of flying critters, used for small game such as rabbit and squirel, almost the only weapon for turkeys, occasionally varmints, and have taken more than a few deer and hogs. You can shoot anything from full bore slugs to the smallest birdshot. Can put slugs into 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards or throw a pattern of #4 thats 3 feet wide at 50 yards. You start your kids out on em with .410s and 20 gauges. You grow into 3.5 inch 10 ga goose guns.
I got a thing for shotguns, want to add one of each major type to my cabinet. Could use a double for dove. An auto would be nice for ducks. Another ultra reliable pump for deer season. Old single shots are great for the kids as well.

I have a bunch of shotguns and love upland hunting. If i had to pick one shotgun for all my hunting it would be my Beretta O&U 20 ga.
