12 gauge, load just about everything from #9 shot to triple .575" balls and double punkin' balls. Ball and Buck is my most recent "favorite plaything".
Some 20 gauge, birdshot and slugs.

Nope never reloaded shotshells.
For the little volume of shotgunning I do I can't see the need in doing it. I typically just use shotshells for small game hunting (0 days last year), dove hunting (3 days last year) and turkey hunting (7 days last year). Now I do hope to get into some slug gunning for whitetails this upcoming 2005 season but still I don't think it warrants the investment. Just me though. If I were a competitive sporting clays, trap, or skeet shooter I'd be all over it.

Welcome aboard with us .45 COLT. Glad to have you here.
NH , I dont load for shotgun shells. One no more than 2 cases of 71/2`s or 8`s usually does me for dove season. Its really not worth my time to load them.If I was doing a lot of skeet or trap I`d definately invest in loading shotgun shells.
I buy a few boxes a year of 00 buck and #4 3inch magnum for various pursuits.;)
I know a few guys who do load their own stuff. They are pretty avid wingshooters and trap shooters though.

Both my wife and I shoot trap so we reload about 5,000 rounds or so a year. I use strictly one load to keep things simple. Winchester AA or Remington STS hull with 17.5 Gr. of Clays powder under a Claybuster AA equivilant wad with 1 1/8 Oz. of #8's. I load on 2 machines, a Mec 650, and a Mec Grabber. Both have served us well for many years. billt Last edited on Thu Feb 10th, 2005 07:31 PM by

I load for the 12, 20 , and the 28ga. I don't load for shot shells as much as i did back in the 70 and 80's because i can buy them factory almost as cheap, except the 28 ga.

I am interested in the slug part, I am trying to work up some loads in 20ga with a .575 Min'ie, 430gr, in a plastic shot wad and sleeve combo, using brass cases.
Have you tried anything along those lines?

I've never used brass cases, but with their internal capacity, they should be ideal for a heavy slug like you are planning to use.
The slugs I've used in a 20 are 5/8 ounce Foster-type, which were pretty much a failure, and 3/4 ounce LEE key-drive slugs, which performed excellently, very accurate at whatever velocity I decided to drive them. LEE has discontinued that mold, don't know why.
Up around 440 grains (3/4 ounce slug and three #1 Buckshot), I couldn't get the velocity I wanted and still keep pressure reasonable. Using the brass case, you probably can. You got enough room in there so you can use a slow powder. (I think).

I am really nonplussed, I have tried 4 times to shoot IMR4227 behind a 430gr .575 slug, only twice have I been able to get the load to even fire the primer, then the powder did not ignite, once , just made a ball of clinkers in the case, next time , just put the slug about 12" down the barrel, did not even ignite any powder.
I then tried the gun with a factory 2 1/2, 1 oz load and it fired fine.
Then tried the brass cases in the gun with nothing except the primers, blasted right off.
Any ideas?
Do you know of a Lee 20ga slug mold that is for sale, or the Lee number of the mold?
Thanks, Don

OK. Now I'm a little confused. I don't use any IMR powders, can't get them here, so I don't know if 4227 is hard to ignite or not.
If only 2 primers fired out of 4, and factory loads fire fine in your gun, first off I'd get some new primers. The primers that did pop didn't ignite the powder, so I'd also probably try different powder, after I tried new primers. CCI 209M primers are about the hottest on the market, but any primer that fires proper should ignite the powder.
Another thought - those brass cases don't require an odd sized primer, like Fiocci or Cheddite, do they? I've never worked with brass shotgun casings, so I don't know.
Clean, open flashholes. Just tryin to think here.
OK, another brainstorm - what wads are you using? A regular 20 gauge wad is too small for the brass shell, won't seal the powder gasses, just give a fizzle on ignition. You need a larger overpowder wad for proper sealing, ignition and combustion. You probably already knew that, just thinking.
Let me know. I'm real interested.
As far as the mold goes, maybe ebay? I'll see if my kid can get me the number - he swiped my mold a while back. They weren't produced very long. I dunno what their problems were, maybe just slow sales.

Sorry I mssed your reply.
The magtech brass shells use large pistol primers, which in my .45's have never had a misfire.
IMR 4227 is about the fastest IMR powder, used in a lot of mag pistol loads and slow to medium cast bullet loads in rifles.
I have tried just cutting the end off a 20 ga field load, dumping the shot out , dropping a .575 in the shot sleeve and shooting it, did fine except only 900fps.
The min'ie I am using is 430gr, that is 1 oz. on the button, exactly the weight of shot I dumped, yet the shot supposedly would do 1300 fps and the solid slug only did 900 fps.
I really need to do some more research on this.

Yeah, I did a little readin' up on brass shotshells after my last post, found out about that primer thing. All my shotgun loading has been in paper or plastic.
About all I can think of is gas seal or crimp. I reckon the brass crimp would be mostly like my roll crimp, that is, a overshot wad held in place by a crimp???? Only crimp problem I remember having was when I decided to use a different overshot wad (thinner) than I had used in the past. (I was out of the ones I normally used and cut some out of flimsy stock). Didn't work well at all.
If the factory loaded shell worked with shot and didn't work good with the slug, about all that leaves is the crimp I would think. Double card it maybe???

This is a work in progress for me, I am willing to try most anything that does not sound reckless.
I plan to get a roll crimper and try that with heavy card wads for over slug use.

I have used a Lee loader since the '60's and a Lee loadall, not the Loadall II since about '80.
Have not found anything I cannot reload with either or both, one was $6.99, the other, $ 19.95, now they are up to $35, oh me , inflation runs rampant!

Hi all,
I load a little 12 gauge lead but load lots of steel for duck hunting.
Use MEC loaders (have two) and load mostly in trap hulls so it works out pretty cheap once you have all the materials
