Who makes a decent youth ,pump shotgun in 20 gauge?I`m not looking for something real expensive.Just a good kids shotgun for dove hunting ,shooting clays and such informally. He`ll likely out grow it in 3  years or so .

Timber,

I honestly don't think you can beat a Remington 870.  Too many guys use them in CQB training and they have tons of accessories for them.

I'd probably go with the Remington 870 Express route.  It's matte finish and lower grade finished wood but neither have anything to do with how it shoots!  I bought one for my lady's father for around $180 used in near mint condition.  I suspect you can find them new for less than $250.  For that price, it's gonna be hard to beat as far as quality.

They make a youth model in 20 ga. with a 21 inch vent ribbed barrel and 13 in. LOP vs.the above model which is the standard "adult model" with 14 in. LOP and 28 inch barrel offered in 20 and 12 ga.

Why not buy the std Rem. 870, then buy a cheap replacement stock from Boydsboys and cut it down. I think you can get them for about $50. Then  put the original back on when he gets bigger. Saves you +$200 down the road.

Winchester used to make the Youth in their 1300 and it come with a certificate for a full size stock . Alll you had to do was mail it in and they would send you a regular stock free of charge.  They may still have that offer.

I have the Winchester 1300 youth in 20 gauge and it's a nice enough shotgun.  Came with 3 chokes.   I don't think there was any certificate for an adult stock though.  (I'd better go find the box and look in it.)

I picked up a brand new 870 Express Magnum in 20 gauge today for a certain hunting buddy of mines birthday.$207 PLUS TAX.:thumbs:It is still a while till his birthday so I ve got it still in the box on the headboard of my bed where he can`t see it.

The little rascal spends most of his online time over at the BSB reading or playing Cabelas big game doofus hunter thing. He doesn`t come by the HB since reloading is "boring"...

I figure I`m safe to post this here as he likely won`t see it..:shameon:

Sounds like some young hunter is going to have a very happy birthday.  Maybe that'll keep him away from the doofus hunter game.   (Probably not)    Good buy.

lol fellas..I don`t see anything in them video games,At least he`s playing a hunting game I guess...

Maybe this shotgun will get him to wanting to shoot clay pigeons with me.

I`ll get some pics with him and his shotgun when the BDay rolls around.I asked him what he wanted, either a gocart or a shotgun since he`s been after me for two years for his own shotgun.

The shotgun won out over the gocart..That has to be a good sign ,I hope...:thumbs:

I got my son the same gun last year for Christmas, ended up giving it to him last week of October though, told him it was mine but I would let him use it for hunting season. Told him it was his on Christmas, but I am pretty sure he knew. He loves it. That finish is thinnnnnnnnnn, first thing you might want to do is take the stocks off and put a coat or two of tung oil on them.

Hehe, I've thought about taking it back, I am a smaller guy, and that short light 20 gauge swings real nice.

Good deal Gene!

Sounds like you found one at the right price too!

I'm sure he'll be happy with it.  Everyone oughtta have an 870 sometime in their hunting or shooting career.  They're just really good shotguns and the express models are top notch for hunters with their matte finish.

I have my old Wingmaster that I'm trying to get ready for slug hunting.  Now, I've got the itch to tinker with it again!

Hey fellas..I hear ya.I`ve been tempted to put her together and shoot it when he`s gone. But I figure it is his gun so that should be him that pulls the trigger first...Sure is tempting though...:wink:I am going to order him a youth stock for it from Brownells and keep the adult stock until he`s ready for it..By then he`ll probably want a 12 gauge but I`ll be needing the 20 to shoot a little too...

Hey Rather..I noticed that too on the stock..I wonder why the heck Remington doesn`t do a little better on that???:confused:I`ve been a loyal customer to Remington over the years and my beloved 270 Win is a Remington..It had a ****ty stock too right out of the box 18 years ago,but it`ll derned sure shoot ...

I started my son off with the 870 Express youth model in 20 ga. years ago. He had little interest in hunting, so it still looks brand new.

I always believed that a good pump 20 was the way to go. A 1/4" dowell cut to completely block the magazine will make it into a nice single shot, and once he (or she) grows up, it will still do a lot, most small game, and deer with slugs.

When they get old enough to buy their own guns, thaey can pick out what they want. Mine bought an 1100 and added plastic stocks, reciever ammo holder, 8 round extension, barrel shortened to match the mag tube and a speed loading kit. Will shuck out 8 so fast its scary. (He still can't wing shoot for squat).
