I'm pretty stupid about shotguns, certainly can't hit the broadside of a barn, 3 big ole tom turkeys will confirm that...anyway got a super deal on 500 rnds of buckshot 00 for $170

I'm in heavy brush in Northern Minnesota and I'll be blasting mostly coyote under 35 yds.
What about chokes and buckshot though? I have a 870 special purpose with cylinder bore but have a modified, and full turkey choke for it.
I'm sure the full turkey choke is asking for trouble but am I risking the barrel using the modified choke?
My understanding is modified is the tightest choke they recommend for steel shot. Can a modified choke handle 00 buck? Or or the pellets simply to big to squeeze down as they exit?
I actually called Remington but the guy simply would not commit an answer.

| In my Moss 500 I got the best patterns with my 28" with mod choke. I tried the full tube but the mod worked best in my gun. It wasn't much tighter than the 18" cyl bore though. I wouldn't think the turkey choke would be a good idea. You have enough ammo to do a little testing. There are no hard and fast rules. You have to pattern your gun and see what it likes. I'm not too impressed with the energy with 00 out past 35yds or so.

My Dad has an old Rem 1100 with a factory full choke barrel. It has fired more buckshot than I have ever owned. It has killed several deer, dove, and probably a few yotes. Full choke is fine for lead. The lead can compress but the steel doesnt have any give.

| I use my benelli nova with three and a half inch 00 buck for getting trid of pests, had a real beaver problem where traps were out of the question. But if you are willing to spend a little money a patternmaster choke tube will keep a great pattern out to almost 50 yards with some of the turkey loads, a coyote learned that the hard way from me. I think you can get one for your 870 from cabelas or brownells. They really work good at 35 yards buckshot is suposed to be in a 18 inch circle.

your mixed up. dont shoot buck shot through anyting tighter than modified. Steel can be shot through a full. I would know, I live in minnesota and I duck hunt with an extrafull choke for clays at fourty yards.
(where I hunt thats the distance their at)

Old topic, but I'll toss in what I know. I load/shoot/test/play with a lot of Buckshot loads. Generally, with a 3-to-a-layer stack load like the one pictured, IC to M will give the tightest pattern. Most factory 00 Buck is that configuration. With a 2-to-a-layer stack, like Hornady's TAP, or some handloads, a tighter choke is better, M to IM, even Full if the load is unbuffered.
BTW, most Factory 00 Buck isn't 00 Buck - .330". True 00 Buck won't layer in 3s in a shotcup - too large.

Wow...I see the price has almost doubled for this stuff since I bought from them 14 months ago. Snooze you lose.
