Does anybody have any experience hunting with slug guns with rifled barrels? I was just reading an article in the November issue of Buckmaster's. The writer was talking about 3 1/2 inch groups at 150 yards. He was writing about sabot and fullbore slugs. But I believe he also mentioned that he had a custom-made shotgun. What can a person expect with your average off-the-shelf shotgun?

I've killed deer with smooth tubes, but never used a rifled one. There's a good bit of stuff listed on Google under "slug guns", like this...

Thanks for the info. Very interesting and useful information. My mom and dad were talking about buying me a new rifle next year for my birthdaybut my dad has been after me to read the article on new sabots and slug guns. So I'm thinking they may have already bought me a shotgun. So if that's the way they went and I have a rifled barrel. I know that it will work good for me.

| Bill, I have not owned one myself but my Brother in law uses one and I new dozens of people who used them when I lived I Iowa. They are very accurate with 2" groups at 100 yards not uncommon. There are new sabots and slugs for the sabots available like the blossoming of alphabet cartridges, a new one every week. Many of these guns are viable 200 yard shooters. Even pump shotguns with cantilevered scope mounts can be extremely accurate. The best seem to be the Marlin and Mossberg dedicated bolt guns, memory says Browning made one too. H&R makes a break action single barrel with a heavy walled barrel that shoots pretty well too. RD

WillBill,
Does a screw-in for an 870Rem count?
Just 1.5" of rifling gives me less then 1.5" 100yard groups with standard Winchester Forester slugs(scoped set-up) on a bench. I could only imagine that the last 1.5" where the slug gets it's spin.....is probably all it needs?

I have heard that a rifled choke is better than nothing. It sound like you get pretty good results with a rifled choke tube though.

I have taken one deer with the rifled slug barrel (Hasting) on my Browning BPS. The barrel grouped the Remington Copper Sabot into a ragged hole at 50 yards, never grouped it at 100. The story is i got drawed for the Radford Arsenal Hunt in VA and this plase has some of the biggest bucks in VA. It is shotgun only and the deer know where the stand are and walk within 125 to 200 yards around them. To make a long story short, i killed one of only two bucks killed on this 50 hunter drawing at around 150 yards . I had practiced and could hit gallon jugs filled with water consistent out to around 175 yards and the practice payed off. I had a 3.5 to 10 Leupold mounted . The warden told me i didn't kill the deer from my stand at that range and i told him to take his hat off and lay it where the deer was standing and i had four shells left and i would prove it to him and he refused. Five rounds is all they will allow for the hunt. The rifle barrel will amaze you how they will group and how far they extend your range from your shotgun. I wouldn't hunt deer with a shotgun without the rifled barrel. This the buck.

| I've hunted with a slug gun just for a few years. I did manage to kill a decent doe last year at a lasered 127 yards with a Remington 870 with cantilever fully rifled slug barrel topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X scoped Wingmaster using a Remington Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded 2 3/4 inch saboted slug. This slug groups about 1.5 or so inch groups at 100 yards. Shot a LOT of different brands before settling on the factory Rem. Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded sabot slugs I went with. Remington buckhammers and the white box Lightfield slugs worked well too. Others didn't. Just my luck. You can expect anywhere from 2 inch to 6 inch groups with just about any brand so plan on trying a bunch of different stuff to find the one that suits you. Ain't cheap but you'll be glad you did.

I too, shoot a Browning BPS with a Hasting rifled barrel. It has open sights. I got drawn for a wild pig hunt at an Army Corps of Engineers lake in my area. Made a life size poster target of a wild pig and shot at it at 100 yards. It was grouping 6" with 5 shots, every one a killing shot. It's tough to sight in on a black target when it doesn't have a one inch orange dot. I wanted to make it a realistic as possible. I was very happy with the results. It gave me a lot of confidence for the upcoming hunt.
The day of the hunt was a nightmare. My hunting partner borrowed a boat from a friend, we set off in the dark of the morning. By the time the sun came up, the boat was leaking bad, then the motor quit and wouldn't start. On top of that, there were no oars!!! We saw pigs on the shore, but you can't shoot from the boat. Three hours later we got towed back in by a friendly fisherman. Never got to fire a shot. I laugh about it now but at the time, I was not a happy hunter!!!
Now I own a camo Mossberg 835 with 1.5 X 4 scope and rifled barrel. Bought this setup to hunt in Idaho for limited range weapon hunts with my uncle. He is going to use the BPS.

My grandpa has a benelli superblackeagle II and one day he told me to shoot at a soy bean plant 109 yards away. one shot it was wiped off the face of the earth. The only thing moddified was a 5x zoom scope and very nice 2 3/4" hornady ammo.
I'd expect a 3" group from an 870 of the shelf with iron sights at 70 yards.
