Can anyone recommend (if there is one even out there) a good double barrel side by side shot gun? If I could wish for one I would like a .410 or a 28 guage but will settle for the old 12 ga. Would like to have a short barrel(s) for ease of handling in the pickup. Want it for a few birds and snakes and self-protection. Interchangable cylinders would be nice too.

I do not know or they are available in the US, but for a plain, strong gun I would take a Russian Baikal shotgun.
They are not much from the looks, but are lasting guns and take a lot of abuse, just right for a gun bumping around in a car.
Regards,
Paul.

I'd hunt the gun shows for a Savage 311. Plain guns, but well made. I've seen them in the last few years for between $200 and $350 or so.

The Steven 311 shotgun series are great guns, although the smaller gauges (I don't think it was made in 28 gauge) are starting to bring premium prices. The Springfield 5100 is essentially the same gun.
I have a Stoeger SxS that I bought a few years back that I like very much; 26" barrels and IC and mod chokes. Blueing is very deep, but wood to metal fit & finish isn't the greatest.

The best SXS shotguns for the money is the CZ Bobwhite and the Ringneck . The Bobwhite is a English stock , double trigger and the Ringneck is their top of the line single trigger with round knob pistol grip. I have the Ringneck in 16 ga and i killed a number of Pheasants in SD last Oct. It is one nice SXS and hammered the big birds. You can go wrong with one of these CZ shotguns if you are looking for a quality SXS that won't cost you a small fortune.

Bea175,
Watch the CZ line. I just saw a CZ with Hugulu stamped on the barrels opposite the CZ stamp. Looks like CZ has contracted with Hugulu of Turkey to build some guns for them. The Hugulu, externally a beautiful gun, is known for soft steel internal parts. Unless CZ heat treats the parts or contracts for hard parts it might be trouble.

If I'm not mistaken the shotgun you looked at was one of the first CZ shotguns. I believe CZ purchased the contract from Hugulu and now market all the shotgun under the CZ name only. Both brand names are made in Turkey. The New Kimber SXS that cost 5 to 10 thousand bucks each are made in Turkey at the same plant.

Could be, that is why I did not say it was a Bobwhite, cause of the CRS. A fellow just brought the gun to me and asked about the stamp of course I recognized it right away. Kimber was also selling MRC barreled actions in a stock as a Kimber too. It has gotten anymore where the name means very little as far as who made the item.

I dont know about texas but in minnesota even walmart has some guns inluding double barrels. They should be easy to find, just look left of the pumps and semi-autos.

I believe the Baikal is now imported as the Remington Spartan. This and the Savage are about it for reasonably priced SxS doubles.

I have a stevens 311 sxs in 16 gauge and I love it. I would shoot this shotgun over any of the other ones that are in my family gun safe. It just has a certain feel to it. The only problem is finding reasonably price shells for it. I dont have a shotgun press so im sol there. The cheapest price i have found is $6.20 at a walmart

proto, If you can get them that cheap, count your blessings. Wally World doesn't even carry them here and some of the sporting goods stores are a couple of bucks higher. RD
