A retired friend of mine told me he had a friend with another LE agency in LA county who loaded rice in his 12g hulls instead of lead, had to shoot fast but the rice broke the birds at 16 yards in trap & skeet,my friend tried some of the loads and broke birds.Recently my friend went in the local feed store & bought a couple of bags of Red Wheat & now he's using it in his 12g loads for 16 yard practise totally biodegradeable nonpolluting! much cheaper than lead so I'm going to load some also! But you can't throw rice at weddings anymore 'cuz the little birdies eat it and it expands in their gizzards and makes them dead.
Rice or barley might be an useful alternative in CAS mounted shooting, where they fire at balloons from atop a galloping horse.
Wonder how popcorn kernels would work in a 12 gauge.

My shotguns are steel no way a popcorn kernel or wheat is hard enough to scratch steel.I shoot reclaimed shot and there's always some fine grains of sand in it and hasn't scratched my barrels.

Box, If you hit somebody inside of 10 or 15 yards with rock salt you could kill them stone dead. There is more than enough weight and energy in rock salt, popcorn and quite a few other things you could put in shotshells that would kill someone at close range. Even hollywood blanks will kill people at close range. Please understand this is not an attack on you personally, but there could be people on here who will read your post, load up some rock salt and blast someone from 3 yards because you said it won't kill them. Any load is dangerous at short range.
If you're interested in seeing some rocksalt testing results:

So far as using rice, wheat or popcorn to break claybirds at regulation Trap, well, I just don't believe it. I'm not gonna run out and buy a box of Uncle Ben's to load up and try out, but until I see a load like that break something at even 15 yards, I'll reamain a skeptic.

45, Thanks for the post and link. I thought that larger chunks of rock salt would carry further than the study but you said it best when you pointed out that any load is dangerous at close range. RD

Well I didnt take it as a personal attack but I also didnt think anyone would make up any kind of load including rock salt and just shoot someone with it.I guess theres all kind of people out there though. And that was an interesting link there about rock salt loads. It seemed kinda weird though that he just dumped out an ounce or better of lead and replaced it with an unknown mass of salt.Im wondering if the lighter load affected the powder burn and the overall velocity?...Robin

I'd guess that to get a high velocity from a load of rocksalt, you'd have to use a powder like Bullseye or Red Dot. Good thought there. Thing is, rocksalt would have such a low BC, it probably wouldn't matter much beyond 20 feet or so. To be sure, somebody would have to try it. I've got rocksalt, but the fastest powder I have id Green Dot. Well, maybe just one shell..........

I have a bunch of shotshell reloading to do so maybe Ill see what I can come up with.I checked with my uncle and he said his dad,my grandfather, made then every now and again with black powder and waxed the salt somehow.Im guessing a steel wad so you can get the most volume for the most mass...

Like so many others, I always heard my father and others talking about how effective rock salt was; well, I assembled many different loads using Bullseye and Red Dot powders and several different wads and like the photo/test showed, it was basically a big failure unless you were at almost arms length. The salt doesn't have enough weight to carry it very far so, in my opinion, unless you were shooting dogs/cats/whatever at 'spitting distance', you were wasting your time using rock salt. I never tried rice but feel that it would do more damage than the salt. Guess I will have to try some now that I am retired and have the time. Just my .02s worth-
