| What are the benifits and the negatives of using an adjustable charge bar verses using the various preset ones. I am new to reloading shotshells and am trying to figure out what I need. I was given a MEC 600 single stage press for 3inch shells, and a MEC650 progressive for 3inch shells. I am planning on setting the progressive up for lead shot and the single stage for steel shot. I hunt more upland birds than I do waterfowl so I figure I will load more lead in a season than steel. Are there any recomendations for reloading that anyone has. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

| I don't load many shotshells, so my experience is limited. I was giver an MEC 600, and it had the adjustable charge bar installed allready. Since I am used to and comfortable with adjustable powder measures for handgun and rifle loading, it seemed pretty natural to me to use it that way. I guess if you loaded one load only, the non adjustable bushing might be a good idea, KISS, simpler is better.

I have several MEC presses – more than I need, but I can never pass up a bargain. I finally settled on Fixed charge bars for the progressives (two 650s and a Grabber) and Adjustable charge bars for all the single-stage presses (Super 250, five 600jrs and two Sizemasters). My way of thinking is that the progressives get set up for long runs of a single load. I don’t need an adjustable bar for that. The single-stage presses I use for short runs of specialty loads. Maybe a box of Buckshot, a couple boxes of Slugs,.or maybe a new Birdshot load I want to try out.
The adjustable bar adds versatility, the fixed bars give repeatability.
If you’re going to load Steel on your 600jr, you’ll probably need the Steel and Large Shot conversion, unless it already has it. It allows for a better drop of the Steel shot. Also, whether you use Fixed or Adjustable, weigh some drops so you know what you’re getting. The bushing figures are only very rough approximations of what your press will actually drop in operation.

| Thanks for the info. I will try an adjustable until I figure out what load I like best and then purchase the individual charge bars.

| I have adjustable bars in 3 MEC rigs and highly like them as the fixed bars are only 'supposed' to be accurate w/one size shot. As I use everything from #2s to #9s, with the adjustable bars, I can tailor my loads to the desired composition and 'not about' as is possible with the fixed bars.
