I'm not really big into shotguns! I had a friend ask me to recommend a shotgun for him, he's had a shoulder injury and needs something with a recoil buffer system anybody got any ideas?

Hello,

Well depending on what he wants to use it for and the price range?

If he has a shoulder injury I would recomend a Semi-Auto shotgun, 12 GA or 20 GA.

Remington 11-87
Browning Auto-5
Benelli M1 or M2 Comforttech - I like this one its a lil pricey but the recoil is reduced alot, I shoot alot of 12 GA. Skeet with it and I have a old surgery scar on my right shoulder (rotor cuff) with some ibuprofen:wink: and a skeet vest (recoil pad) I am GTG. Depending on Pricing and what he wants to do with the shotgun.

I guess I'm having a bit of a problem with the shoulder injury part, I don't know how sensitive the shooter is or will be.  My rotator cuff ceased being any problem at all a year after the repair, and I was able to shoot trap after 6 months with minimum difficulty.

The advantages of reduced punch with semi-autos is true, with caveats.  Trap loads are pretty light and won't create problems even if the gun isn't buffered unless the injury is really debilitating.  When shifting to hunting loads, there will be a lot more punch to the carcass.  I believe, but do not know, that some autos can be tuned to accomodate different loads, and should be to prevent battering of the action.

There are a zillion after market recoil reducer "systems" that will help, and are equally applicable to any action, auto, pump, single shot and doubles.  Money helps here, there is no such thing as inexpensive when you get around to sensitive shooters.  Because of the casual uses intended, I think I'd go away from a semi and get a pump fitted with a reducer in the stock.  Several reasons for that thinking, mostly based on simplicity of maintenance.  A pump is too basic an arm to confound and confuse when cleaning and lubing, where an auto just has lots of parts that go together just right or it doesn't work at all.  An in stock buffer requires no maintenance at all.

Bear in mind that reducers simply change the duration of impact on the shoulder.  The same amount of energy is applied, it is just spread out over time; so called "felt" recoil is thus made less onerous.  In the case of autos, some is absorbed cycling the action, but it isn't much (in my experience.)

The real felt recoil reducer is weight.  If that shoulder can lift the weight, a heavy gun will offer less felt punch than a lighter one. (Shooting vests are recommended, too.)

I dont recomend autos for trap loads anymore because I shot it and the trap shots jamed halfway out. when i went to unjam it it came loose and sliced the end of my thumb off. Sure their good for hunting and my story doesnt seem like a reason but I dont want to unjam the gun every time i take a shot. so in trap i stick with a pump.

Nova is right about the jamming that can happen with autos.  That said, there are a  lot of guys shooting trap with autos at my club.  This re-inforces my idea that they can be tuned for the loads.  I guess I should confirm that sometime, but there are no autos in my future, so may well not bother.
