Folks,
I shoot an 870, have the Deer Slug choke, which is the best deer slugs to go deer hunting with? I am in Ohio, where gun season means shotgun season.
Look at it from this point of view, this for my food supply, I am willing to share with my friends and neighbors.
Thanks,
Jerry

I got into shotgun slugging for the very same reason - to hunt deer in the great state of Ohio where there have been more than one decent buck taken over the years.
I too hunted with an 870 except mine was a fully rifled cantilever barrel 12 gauge. Tried MANY loads with it and finally settled on Remington 2 3/4 inch Premier Core-Lokt Sabots. I have a few buddies that have shot smoothbore too and the Brenneke style slugs shoot pretty well.
You've just gotta try and see what works best for you, of course. But if I would recommend 3 boxes of ammo to test I'd rate them as follows:
#1 Definitely give the white-box Lightfield slugs a try. They have shot great out of rifled and smooth bore 870's but their velocity hasn't been at the top of the game (though not a huge deal with shotguns)
#2 Of all the Remington Shells to try in YOUR shotgun, I'd recommend the Buckhammer (they fly well enough in most guns, across the board, from what I've seen)Try Remington Sabots of various makes. There's a new green emerald tip thing out now I'd like to try but the good old standards like the Premier Core-Lokt and Copper Solid shot well.
#3 Probably anything saboted, like Brenneke/Hornady/Federal/Winchester, etc.
I suspect you'll get acceptable results from either the whitebox Lightfields or Remington Buckhammers in your particular setup.
Good luck!

I bought some slugs from a guy I know who cast them with a lee slug mold.I havnt shot any deer with them but the few I shot at my range seemed to do pretty well.I think I loaded them with a standard wad into sts hulls with 1/8 felt under the slug in the cup and a standard 8point crimp.
