I live in Ohio and have a 870 12 guage with the rifled slug choke for the barrel. I am wondering which slug sheel will work the best. So I have listed the ones that I have on hand.

Before hunting season, I need to get out and practice some, so I need from all of you out with experience in using shotgun deer slugs, which one should I choose? I set up a poll to show how many people use what types.

Thanks,

Jerry

When I lived in shotgun-only territory, Remington rifled slugs were my choice (for a commercial load). Not a long range set-up, but they did the job.

make that four. like the pre four stroke fase those who rode four strokes were made fun of. I know slugs are in the future.

It's a pamphlet they had at the show http://www.brennekeusa.com I picked up in case anyone wanted any info on them Super Sabot 12g 3" lead free 1 1/8oz for rifled barrels only, range 100 yards muzzle: 1526fps energy 2536ft lbs ; 100 yards 1065fps energy 1236 ft lbs; 2 3/4 " Super Sabot  1 1/8oz accuracy 2 1/2" with 5 rounds at 100yds for 3 & 2 3/4 inch shells, they got my attention the way they were put toigether. Brenneke email brennekeusa@clinton.net PH 800-753-9733.  I haven't had to use slugs since I left in NYS in 1968  but I do keep some 12g slugs on hand for the  wildlife I dealt with.

When I did schuetzen matches I cast bullets with a Lee Electric Pot in 32-20 & 45-70 then I sold everything except the pot but bought molds for casting wrist rocket lead balls when wrist rockets were made in the USA & they knew how to(chinese copies are junk). and molds for  3#  & 5# lead sinkers  for deep water(900 feet) fishing trips near the channel islands off of Oxnard & Ventura we'd catch scorpion family bottom dwelling fish californians call cow cod(no cod in ca waters) they come up pink, yellow, red, brown, etc but the last ray of the dorsal fin has a poison  sac touch it and you know why they're called scorpion fish. We also caught Ling Cod actually a Greening with a mouth full of very sharp teeth, flesh light green but cooked it's white & tasty did that in the late 70's & 80's excellent eating fish  beer batter fried.I still have lots of 5# sinkers and  several hundred pounds of  reclaimed lead shot that I bought for $5/25# bag. I got seasick on nearly every trip so I switched to hunting, shooting & fresh water fishing.

IMHO,if it's a smoothbore, getcha some of the Federal Tru-Ball slugs.Out to 100 yds., you'll think you have a rifled slug barrel....no kidding.

I no longer use slugs for deer-but  I got some for Worst-Case Scenario for HD-  they're the Federal Tactical F127's;also available in reduced-recoil for $1 more, and they are sinfully cheap, due to a Police order that was cancelled; otherwise not sold to the general public.Get 'em at Ammunitiontogo.com,if they aren't sold out.....$15.95 for full-power; $16.95 for reduced-recoil loads (for a box of 25 shells!!! I kid you not).

And for those like myself who want 00 buck for HD or maybe hunting, they have the Federal Tactical F127's for the same prices listed above, both full- and reduced loads,or at least they had all these a coupla weeks ago.

And I didn't mean to hijack the thread off into SD/HD territory....Just hadn't had a chance to post what I think is a great deal.

I found a 100 round box of Federal #3 shot at Wally world for $20. This is what I would use on the non 4 legged critters.

But the state says I have to use slugs or pumkin balls for deer, even in my own back yard.
