I did a search on this forum but came up empty. I've been doing some reading about the nickel plated shot and it sounds worth trying. Has anyone here used it. It's a lot more expensive but if it performs. Thinking about maybe some shot to try on the local turkeys and some buckshot for coyotes and deer.

I’m not real big on plated shot. The cost is high and a lot (not all) of it isn’t really plated, it’s just a copper or nickel wash. For “Birdshot” sizes, a good-quality “Magnum” shot works fine. It is harder than “Chilled” shot, and excellent loads can be made with it. The pattern board is your best friend when you’re trying to make quality loads. Remember, the pattern isn’t dependant on just the shot and choke – powder and wad make a huge difference.

If you’re loading Buckshot, either cast your own or buy the hardest Buck you can find.  I cast all the sizes I can get molds for, but have to buy anything I need from T to #2.

Nickel shot can be useful, and I use it when pretty much all else has failed when it comes to tightening patterns.  As previously stated, magnum (high antimony) shot & a good buffer will probably get you where you need to go.  However, I do have some nickel plated shot for use in my cylinder bore trade musket when turkey hunting.  Here, every little bit counts!
While nickle or copper plated shot is more expensive, if you look at the number of shells you load/hunt with while using it, it really isn't that expensive.   I mean, do you want to risk loosing a gobbler (one or two shots a year) in order to save a few dollars?  Esp. on an out of state trip?  Just some more thoughts.

The only thing plated shot is supposed to do is stop pelet deformation. I find buffer and chilled or magnum shot to be just as good. I worry about wads. This year I'm going to try some unslit and ad 3 slits 3/4ths the way down. I have high hopes for that "heavy duty" load I posted in the load data section. But of course I need to try alot so I'm trying 3 others too.

One thing I've found wih either copper or nickle plated shot is that it doesn't drag feathers into the meat. With lead shot pheasant meat always seems to have the very fine underfeathers pulled into the shot channels. Plated shot nearly eliminates this.  RD
