Is it safe to shoot slugs down the barrel that is not open bore. I use the slugs in my short barrel for home defense, but would like to use them in my longer barrel for hunting.

You mean your barrel has a fixed choke to it? If it does, I wouldn't shoot slugs thru it.

Depends on the slug and the choke of the gun....most foster type slugs can be safely used through any fixed choke, but usually do better with a more 'open' choke.....there are some slugs out there that need to be fired from a cylinder bore; they usually have a warning on the package that says something to that effect.
What type of slugs are you shooting, and what is the choke on the barrel?

You can shoot RIFLED slugs through anything up to a modified choke. I've heard people shooting slugs out of a full choke but I would not take the chance. Just make sure they are rifled slugs. Any other slugs can be fired through anything up to improved cylinder. Your safe with rifled slugs. I recomend Remington 7/8oz slugger rifled slugs.

The rifled Foster slug can be fired through any choke up to Full. It's a hollow-base design, made to swage down. It shouldn't be fired in a back-bored barrel. There's a slight chance of it tipping and possibly lodging in one of them critters.

Of course you can, I've done it for 30+ years.
Why are you using slugs for home defense?

I have a modified, replaceable choke on my shotgun barrel. I'm using Winchester 3/4oz rifled slugs. I use a mixture of 7 1/2 bird shot and slugs in case of emergency.
Where I'm at, it is hard to find some 00 buck in 20 guage which is what Id prefer.

That's probably because no one makes a 20 gauge load with 00 buckshot....the biggest you're going to find is #3 buck.

Federal still makes a couple of #2 Buck loads in 20 Gauge. Winchester used to make a #1 Buck load, maybe others did too, I disremember. #1 Buck is the largest shot that will layer in a 20 Gauge, and that only without a shotcup. Anything bigger, it fits in a sort of wobbly stack.

I stand corrected, as usual.

I didn't mean that exactly as a "correction" Those Federal loads aren't real common, and I haven't seen any #1 Buck loads in 20 Gauge for a long time. When it comes to any of the sub-gauges (I hate that term, just us it for wnat of anything better this early in the morning) good Buckshot loads are lacking. Probably the market isn't there, but a load of T or TT would make a good predator load.
