Buffer is a filler that's usually used in heavy or mag loads with large lead pellets, plated lead pellets, steel or bismuth. It's designed to help keep the shot pellets from deforming and optimize shot pattern. There are several types of buffer and I use #47 when I load 00 shot shells. I bought my buffer from Ballistic Products.

As with all things related to loading shot shells the weight of the buffer used must be taken into account when working up a load. Generally the loading manual will list the weight needed.

as a shot buffer it cushions lead shot and makes the patterns more uniform.Ballistic filler comes in different sizes and can be poured into a shot cup over the shot and shaken down into the shot.it is also a good filler for light loads using small powder charges in large straight wall cases.it is placed over the powder charge,using enough to compress it and keep it above the powder.I have heard of cases of badly pitted bores shooting lead bullets with much improved accuraccy using a ballistic filler over powder.GREX was the first that i remembered and was  granulated polyethelene.

So using Cream of Wheat is not the same thing, like some of us do for fill in our large bore rifle and pistol cartridges?

cream of wheat would not be bad in a straight wall case,but in a bottleneck it could be inconsisnent.I would bet that ranch13 has a lot of experience with it.

@Jerry:

This cream of wheat, do you use this without a card on top of the powder charge?

Does this cream not mix with the load?

I am asking, because I need to use something to fill the remaining space of my black-powder 12,7 x 44R cartridges, have authorisation now to load them, finally.

I was thinking about some kind of a filler made of cardboard discs from those things I do not know the English name of but which are used to put a glass of beer on when you are in a bar.

Regards,

Paul T.

Paul, Cream of Wheat is a brand name for a type of hot breakfast cereal like farina or very fine polenta. Some poeople use it for fireforming cases employing a case full over 4 - 5 grains of shotgun powder. I think Jerry is asking if it can be used as a shot buffer.

As for a filler for your loads...Some people use Dacron fiber, like that used for pillow stuffing, over the powder. If you do an internet search you will se all types of opinions on this practice. RD
