Younger guys might not be able to recall the time, but when I was a kid, every truck in small town Texas, and most citys, too, had a gunrack in the back window, and usually carried a single shot shotgun like these. How many will admit to even owning one of these oldies? They were never intended to impress people, and sure don't, but I remember killing a whole bunch of rabbits, squirrels, and doves with one.

These are a couple of guns I picked up doing favors for people, just knew I liked guns, and gave me these old girls.

Top is a Riverside Arms 16 bore, seen better days but still useable after some deep cleaning.

Bottom is a Revelation (Hell anybody even remember Western Auto?) 20 bore, made by Savage.I reblued the barrel on this one.

These aren't collectable, never gonna increase in value much, just working class guns

Those are not nice guns, but they are good guns.

Over here one does not see them very much, but I was in Spain many years agoo and I watched a small boy shooting doves with a gun like one of those;

Every shot he fired was a hit and he shot those doves in such a way, he was able to pull the cap from his head and catch the shot dove in it without having to do more than a couple of steps.

Not sure if I should admit to remembering Western Auto or not, might give everyone the thought of me getting gray hairs or something....  Crap too late!  Already got the grays, but it's better then that big bald spot working it's way out from the center of my head!

Great looking scatter guns there!  You still keep them in the rear window?

Nah, they don't ride in the rear window. With 1.2 million in the area, the window would be broken and they would be gone in about 1.5 milliseconds after parking. I don't have a speck of grey hair, though. Trust me, it would be easy to spot in the 8 hairs I have left.

Heh, no I don't have a gun rack in the rear window of the truck. I do, however, have a Western Field pump in 20-gauge that I take out back and break clays with often. Doesn't kick, easy and cheap to reload. Can't ask for more than that!

Yes, I own a new H&R 12ga single.. Cut the barrel back to 24", fitted some Tru-Glo sights with Loctite Black Max, and put on a Pachmyr slip-on recoil pad..

Great slug shooter, with old type shells and the Aguila shorties..

Haven't tried buckshot yet. Would be a short range proposition with a straight cylinder bbl.

No, not just one.  I have two in Twelve Gauge.  One has absolutely no markings on it except a 4-digit serial number. I have been told it is known as a Traders Shotgun.

Other than these two I also have a Stevens .410 single shot.

and until recently I had one chambered in 20 gauge as well.

And yes I remember Western Auto...I bought my first hand gun in a Western Auto store..an FIE .22 LR.

I do not dare to try it out, but it would be interesting to know, how long it would take, before somebody would have called the police to tell them that there is a gun visible in a car;

result: car opened with violence, hous search from top to bottom and every gun related item confiscated, gun permit withdrawn for life and a couple of thousand Euros to pay.

Regards,

Paul.

My nephew's first firearm purchase was a NEF 20ga. when he was 11.  I believe he duck and goose hunted with it.

'nother one, a "columbia" 12 bore. This one was really ratty, black spraypaint on the barrel. Still should be shootable.

Left side of buttstock, obviously a presentation piece! Have no idea who F.A.V., M.V.A., or J.A.V.S. are, but it did mean something to somebody once.

I hate to tell you this, but we have a Western Auto store in town, it is owned by a local franchisee and is stocked by Sears, owner of the name.
No guns, though.
Paul, in Texas it is very legal to openly display long arms in public, many rural people still have a rifle and/or a shotgun hanging in the back window, the mounts are available locally, but the population here is 2,300, not what pore old Charlie has to put up with.
:D

I have my grandpaws Revelation 20 gauge pump and his Iver Johnson single shot 12 gauge. He told me it was old when he bought it as a young man 1940.
I also have my Stevens single shot 410 that my father bought me used as a Christmas present when I was seven years old.
These were guns made to function not sit in a case and look at.Gotta love em...

Long, long ago my Dad gave me his first two shotguns. He got the first when he was 10. He was overjoyed to be getting a gun for Xmas and longed for a 12ga double but instead got a little .410 single. Despair! The following Xmas he got... a 20ga single! Oh, woe! But he is gone now and I have them. They are both "Model WN"s— whatever that is, and very nicely made. The tiny little .410 gets a lot of pest-use from me still.

I live out where there are still plenty of window racks for guns. My county is a big one, with less than 2000 souls and only two LEOs in the whole county. I guess you could say we are still part of the "gun culture" here.

When we-my younger brother and myself-were growing up in a very small west Tx farming/ranching community in the 50s-60s, our first shotguns were just like those shown, his was a H&R and I believe mine was a Savage, both in 12 ga.  My biggest complaint is they were full choke and my dad wouldn't let me trim it back to something like modified or improved and being a 11-12 yr old farm boy, I didn't have $$ to take it to the local gunsmith to let him open the choke.  I also remember they kicked like a mule!  Oh well, the memories of that era....

Just remembered, I bought a Rem 1100 the first year they were introduced and I traded my Savage shotgun to a friend for an Ithica lever-action single shot .22.  Later traded Ithica for Rem 550 semi-auto; still have it as mate to one left by my father.  After returning from Pacific on his B29, the first 2 (and only) firearms he ever owned were a Rem 870 which my brother has and the Rem 550 which I have.

The only thing I have like that now is a Stevens 410. I did have a Ted Williams that was bought in Sears many years ago. That eventually was traded for something else.

I still have a Western Field pump, which is a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga. Purchased it in 1969, new. I have numerous, much more expensive shotguns now, but I don't know that they are better. I call it my mud gun and still use it in wet conditions.

My first gun was an Iver Johnson 16ga. It was an exposed hammer single shot and had a plastic stock. Not comp, PLASTIC! In the butt was a hole with a screw in plug so you could remove the plug and add sand to give the gun more weight. I was young then and figured if the plug came out plaster would stay in!

My next shotgun came from Opplinger's Western Auto in Independence, Ore. It was a Revelation 12ga, AKA Mossberg 500. They also sold the mighty fine Mossberg mod 800 rifles!

One of my friends back then hunted with a 12ga Long Tom. Single shot exposed hammer with a 34" barrel!

I forgot one inbetween the Iver Johnson and the Revelation. It was a 16ga bolt action Mossberg with a wonderful adjustable choke on the end of the barrel, first cabin!

Shot the 16 bore last weekend, time and circumstances  limited it to just a couple of shots. Raining, couldn't pattern it on paper, just did a redneck patterning, shooting against rocks/clay. Looks to be about a modified choke.
