I'm trying to develop a 12 gauge slug load that will shoot accurately out to 100 yards.
When i shoot lightfield 2 3/4 1 oz slugs from my shotgun (remington 870 w/hastings rifled barrel and cantilevered scope) it will shoot 3 shots touching @ 100yds.
Same type of group with the hastings slugs.
Only problem is the cost/ at ~ $3 per shot, it gets expensive, quick.
Anyway, I'm using the lee 1 oz keyed slug and I hear a whizzing noise as the slug goes down range. I've read this is because the wad is hanging on to the slug and will let go at any distance which is screwing up accruacy beyond 25 yards.
Has anyone run into this problem before ? If so, were you able to correct it and get the wad to release from the slug consistently ? How ?
The wads i'm using are WWAA12SL and the slugs are made of pure lead.
appreciate any advice you can provide.

Put a thin hard card wad under the slug. That will stop the hang-up.

06, I think .45Colt has the solution to this one as the set back is probably forcing the base tightly into the corner where the side wall and base meet. While you wouldn't want to bevel them too much, as anything that decreases base size increases the problem, you might try just slightly rounding off the slug corner all the way around so they don't wedge in the corner of the wad.
Simplest way to go is the hard card though. I cut card wads out of old playing cards for roll crimping. I use a shotgun shell base from which I've carefully removed the plastic. I run a stove bolt through the primer hole and chuck it in my drill press. I also drill another small hole off to one side of the primer hole to poke the cards out with a nail. I just fire up the press put the card on a 2x4 and cut them out. I use 20 ga to make 16 ga roll crimp over shot wads. Perhaps you could do the same for under slug wads. RD

That whistle you hear is probably just the wad hitting the air just right. It is common when duck hunting. Only the accracy will tell.

i just received 1000 nitro cards from circle fly wads in yesterday's mail. now i just need to cast more slugs and mix a couple of batches shells with different configurations to see if the cards help and which recipe the gun likes best. with my current work schedule, it's likely going to take a month or better before i get the time but i'll be working on it asap.

If your accuracy still isn't what you want/expect/need, another thing you can try:
Cut the crush section out of the wads. Then load the lower part (gas seal). Add fiber filler wads (replacing the crush section). Then the shot cup, hard card and slug. A PITA to load, but can give greater accuracy. The crush sections of wads don't collapse perfectly, can put a slight cant on the slug. I use that method with buckshot sometimes, it gives a better "pattern". At buckshot ranges, all pellets will be on target. (Usually).

I Finally got a chance to go to the range and shoot these reloads. The results were TERRIBLE. At 50 yards the best "group" was around 22 inches. I'm going to try cutting out the crush section of the wad and using filler cards to fill the hull.
No idea how long it will take to shoot these due to the holidays and hunting season but i'll post the results when i have them. Wish me luck....

BTW -- the fiber card under the slug inside the wad did the trick of eliminating the whizzing sound the original loads were making. Thanks again

Glad you got one improvement, one thing at a time. If yuou have a hard time finding fiber fillers, BalisticProducts has them, in all gauges. Over powder wads too so as to stop having to cut up shotcups.

Yes, that's pretty bad.
What powder/charge weight are you using? I had problems using ball powder (specifically HS-6) with a one ounce payload. Erratic velocities, wild shots. Maybe a hotter primer would have helped me, I don't know. (I almost always use W209 primers). Just a random thought.
