Hi Everyone. I have a question about wad substitution charts that I have seen.
Where it says WAA12: WT12 Or Reminton Fig 8: CB3118-12A . dose that mean you can just substitute the WT12 for the WAA12 or dose that mean they can be interchanged eather way?
I hope I exxplaind that right.
Thank You!
Mike

Normally, you can substitute either way, but the data that accompanies the chart usually will have data only for the first wad called out in each substitution. In your example, for a WAA12 and a Remington Figure 8.
Now, one substitution that I've used for years, and I see in the Substitution Charts and in your example) is the WT12 for the WAA12. That one has long been a "standard" substitution. I have some pressure data that suggests that it might not be such a good idea, particularly in a high pressure load. The data is far from complete, but it looks like the WT12 will produce a higher pressure than the WAA12. (Data from Alliant, 1999, 2004). I'm not convinced that all the pressure data available is completely accurate. Some just goes against reason, while certain isolated examples break the Laws of Physics. Those abberations are explained away "because shotshells don't behave the same as metallics", or some other drivel. Now, differences in powder lots or lots of wads, even loading techniques do affect pressure, so that could account for a lot of inconsistencies. Shotshells can be touchy to load. Be careful, follow published data and you should be OK. If something published looks to be just not right, Question it. All the manufacturers occasionally make a mistake.

Prospect, Click on the link below to go to the Hodgdon reloading manual. Check out the bottom LH corner of page 35 for interchange data. I've been using Hodgdons interchange chart for 15 or more years and never had a problem. Rockydog

You cannot change wads willy nilly. Some wads are meant for straight walled hulls and others are meant for tapered hulls.
Get yourself the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manual.
Use the recipes are listed.

Thanks Everyone! I have reloading manuals. I was just unsure about the wad substitution charts that are in them.

a good rule of thumb is if it is under 9000psi you can interchange almost any wad or primer. you can interchange any win AA wad because the only diffence in them is the length of the shotcup.
