My hubby was such a sweetheart he knows I love to shoot shotguns(I started with a 12g) so when we picked up his new stoeger 20g He decided to let me shoot first-we had a blast and I wanted to shoot more-too bad we had to save some shells for grouse season....

That is really great going.

I have to teach Katie about shooting slug guns, so she will graduate from 22 LR to 12g. Any advise?

Thanks,

Jerry

go with 12 gauge on a lead sled first. Once she is convinced it wont hurt let her take a standing shot. Definitely make sure she doesn't have a rifle stance. I have seen people do that and they land on their butt. Leaning forward is the key. Then just have her pull the trigger like a rifle and hold the barrel tightly. If you don't the gun will recoil up before the slug is out and it will hit high.

Jerry, Either purchase some Win AA low recoil/low noise loads or load some of your own using 7/8 ounce of shot at about 1100 FPS. Start her out on some of these. EAR MUFFS ARE IMPORTANT! A lot of perception of recoil comes from the bang. Then work up in small increments to heavier loads. When you do get up to slug loads limit rounds to 5 at any one practice session. Sore shoulders do nothing to encourage trying this again. Also, don't laugh now, I had a woman trap shooter tell me that bra straps with front buckles hurt like hell after a few shots. I always mentioned this when teaching womens trap classes for NWTF Women in the Outdoors program. The class always agreed. RD

The main thing is keeping her from getting hurt, one time hurt and she may be ruined for life. Make good and sure she holds the gun correctly, With Stacie I shot everything first, let her know what it looked like to have it shot in front of her, take the time and and make it fun, she will be fine.
