I am preparing to use a method of annealing that requires coating the brass with motor mica.
I think its used a dry lube for neck I.D. used before seating a bullet usually.

it has many uses , case neck sizing is but one ,it also lubricates shotgun wads slick as heck ! do u recall the semi clear inserts in a old stove or fireplace that let u see the flame ? that was also mica ,i read ur annealing thread, i have never tried it that way , i suppose u could lube them with the mica the same way one does shotgun wads, put them in a big plastic bag add mica and shake ,plz post ur end results ! i'm really curious about this one ,thanx

Does lubing the wads provide much benefit? Do you have to adjust the load for the lower friction?

I use it to coat tumble lube bullets, it works great for that.

it works well on any soft lubed bullets ! when i think about it .... years ago hornady used to use a clear type lube like lee's liquid alox or the xlox ( mite of been a rooster product for all i know ) but mite that be what was on the hornady hbwc's ? dragon did mention powdery and i was thinking it was like some of their old lube i had seen that got old and powdery on the bullet ....if not they could dust them with it too ...( just ramblin i know ...)

I guess what I meant was, has anyone ran this across a chrony to see if you actually get some velocity from it? I'd have no use for it right now but I could see it being good for steel or hunting buck loads if it actually works. Something to throw in the kit bag for later.

The initial attempt with used cases and powder graphit looked pretty good. the thread I read about the process suggested 15 secs at lead temp of 875* . I had the lead at 700 and only went 5 seconds and maybe not long enough. Have to experiment a little more. 875* seems pretty hot.
Thanks all for the point to some mica. Ill have to try it on my wads to. great idea.

The lube on those hornady bullets is dry and powdery, when you pick one up it's kind of like picking up a powdered donut, lol. Lots still on the donut but a little on your fingers. I don't lick the lube afterward though.

is it "slickery " ?if so then it prolly is ,was it remington's swaged bullets that were grey as if they had been graphited ,yet there was more to their lube i'm sure ...prolly the same type thing with hornady's i bet
have to agree that the sugar covered donuts as messy as they are is a good reference point lolz( also better than the chocogunk covered ones )
the main thing i worry about is getting the rear of the shell annealed , thaz not what we want at all, somewhere in my mind( pre-flu) i recall reading about lead annealing but it was an edited story so it had to be briefly in passing ..possibly in another forum ( like cast boolits) the hornady system is a great way for a noob to learn to anneal
edit for add....
875 is a bit warm for general casting ,some alloys need it ,the flame method is much hotter but it also doesnt take very long ,u may need the heat to help alleviate the sticking ( lead sticks like crazy to alot of things until sufficiently hot )

If you need Mica, use the stuff that Midway sells by Frankfort Arsenal. It is a powder. I use that for necks, tumble lube bullets and some wads/sabots for shotshells.

I have Motor Mica coming in about three days. You need so little for case neck treatments. It can be mailed to you. Should you wish to pre-treat plastic shotgun wads or cast bullets, you will need larger quantities. I have not priced it out by the ounce yet, but should be much cheaper than Midway or other common reloading sources. Bob Schue. email at motormica@gmail.com
