I'm starting to load .308 Winchester and can't find H4895 or Varget. Any suggestions.
I bought some IMR 3031, 4064, and 4320 hoping they would work. Haven't actually got anything loaded yet, but read that Varget and H4895 are real good in .308.

I was in the same boat. Tried some loads for .308Win using Win748, Reloader 15 and IMR4895 - all work pretty well. Win748 meters very nicely, being a finer grained powder.

Bigdog, where did you find 748? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Look for some TAC. It is about equivelant of 4895. The only problem with TAC is there doesn't seem to be much data for it.

From what you bought there, IMR 3031 is a classic 308 powder. There are more modern options available, like Varget, but I had very good results with 3031 when I first started loading 308.

All powders seem pretty hit and miss on availability, buying online works the best for me due to multitude of scources. The stores when the powders comes in are sold out with in days sometimes hours if its a common powder. Seems like powders come and go in cycles then it shows up again in a few months. So if you find something you can use you may as well buy it so you dont have to look for it when you run out. Not saying you have to buy out the store, just add to you inventory a little at a time as often as you can afford. Least thats what i do. Course i dont buy less than 16 pounds online due to hazmat and freight charges that get awful high. Of course soon your house has so much powder in you about have to put a HAZMAT placard on the outside :)
Just a thought on the H4895
I have a friend that bought some GI equivalent several years ago, about 20 pounds he still trying to use it up. Perhaps there may be something like that out there. Or even the RG 4895 a Imr 4895 equivelent i use IMR 4895 in 308 and it performs for me well. Ive never gotten to heavy in the 308 biz though and ive never really tried to peak its performance so there prob is a better powder out there for it, but the imr is something i have a lot of so i use it. Ive came across Win 748 in local stores lately maybe some of its floating around.

IMR 3031 works great on 308. AA2520, Viht N140 (hard to find), are other powders that work good.

Your 4064 is probably going to do well as you work with it...

When I started loading .308, I bought Win 748BR and 4064.
The 4064 worked about as well as the 748, so was a wash.
I prefered the metering of the 748 Ball, used it ever since.

the 308 is one of those beautiful medium cased rounds ... it's fairly forgiving and alot works well in it ( true that some may take a bit more tinkerin ..) alot would depend upon the bullet weight .... blc2 is decent most the 4064's...powder valley has single pound cans of h4895..no varget but they do have a few decent ones in the accurate line ...some would also depend upon the type of rifle action ....

Hey guys, appreceiate all the responses. I did get a pound of BLC2 today. From what you guys have said it sounds like I got it covered with 3031, 4064, 4320, and BLC2. I'll try to get some loaded soon and report back.

GGG - gotta get it where you find it. I got most of my powder at Sportsman's Warehouse, just before they folded locally. It got hard to find eight pound jugs of anything, so I ended up with a 'pound of this, two pounds of that...' - But I did finally find 8-pound jugs of British Surplus "RG4895" at Wideners - it uses the same data as IMR4895. Works pretty well, but as a stick powder it doesn't always meter well. I tend to use my Lee Dippers, load a bit light then trickle up with a scale.
TAC is made by Ramshot. Good powder, but I use it only in my .223Rem loads.

Just got back from the gun club. Didn't shoot very much just 10 rounds I loaded, and a 5 shot group with Federal .308 match w/168 gr Sierrs. The group on the left is the 10 I handloaded.
Hornady match case, new unfired
Federal 210M primers
Sierra 168 match set to just touch the lands
39.0 gr. IMR 3031
In the group on the left, there are 8 shots thru the big hole. Need to load some more and see if the load is consistant.

Glock,
If that's a 100yd target, you have NO problems with your handloads......
The shelf ammo on the right could be seating depth..... looks like your rifle at least likes them close to thelands

For my M1As, I use IMR 4895, sometimes IMR 4064. For all the rest of my medium sized cartridges, I use 748. I have lots of other powders on hand and load a lot of different calibers.
As it was mentioned, get it where you can. You may want to buy an extra can if they have it.

do you use the IMR 4895 in your M1A for port pressure reasons? I assume that the same rules apply as the M1 garand for operating rod and gas pressure?

Stretch, that is 100 yards. The rifle seems to like the bullet into the lands. According to the load data I have 39.0 gr of IMR 3031 is a starting load. However I just looked at the Sierra #5 edition, and 39.0 is near max on their chart. I was using that load to fire form the new Hornady brass.
Before this trip to the range I was just about ready to sell this rifle. I believe it's now a keeper.
