hi all-

curious as to what my first powder should be. im loading for a thompson encore 15in 223. im not looking for benchrest accuracy, cause even though the gun may be able to do it, i cant  my main concerns are reasonably clean, accurate, safe, and affordable. also if you could, include with the powder an average/reasonable price per pound i should expect to pay for it.

also does anyone have any primer preferences for their 223 practice/varm. rounds?

thanks again, any and all help is appreciated:homer:

Hi tricky...My Favorite powder of choice for the 223 Rem is VARGET..I`m also know to use BL(C)2 a little.VARGET with the heavier bullets has proven to be very well suited in one of my 223`s and I also team it with a 40 gr VMAX bullet for my coyote rifle.

I only use Winchester small rifle primers.

We have quite a few 223 reloaders on the board and they`ll probably give you some of their favorite powders and recipes too..:wink:Expect to pay 20 bucks a pound for canister grade from gunshops that sell powder. You can do a lot better if you order in bulk..

Welcome aboard..

Gene

H335 has alwasy been the old stand by for 223. Varget and H or IMR 4895 will do the job also. Since H335 is a spherical it will meter better through your powder measure.

Tricky,

I've found this powder works excellent for loading the .223. It's considerably cheaper than a lot of the other powders out there. Natchez is a really good place to deal with as well. It's also a ball powder and flows thru a measure really well.  billt

My 223's shoot the best across the board with H-335 or Win 748. With the Encore i would start with H-335 and the 50 gr Nosler BT or Hornady 50 gr V-Max. with Fed or CCI match primers. With the 15 inch barrel you might want to try H-322  which is a little quicker than H-335. H332 has won more matchs than any powder on the market.  Look at what powders you already have and compare them in your loading manual and see which one will give you the best vel with a medium book load and start with it. My opinion the Encore will shoot with just about any thing you load for it.

Hi Tricky,   what bullets will you be shooting in your 223?   The Hornady V-Max have worked well for me.   I'm thinking your Encore probably has a 1/12" twist and will do good with bullet weights from 40 to 55 grs.  Often Midway has the 250 bullet boxes on sale for about $24, maybe less.

For powders I like W748, Varget and Benchmark.   In my area powder can range in price from $16 to $24 a pound.  (I avoid the $24 place)

Primers are Winchester small rifle.

we'll bullet choice i was unsure of, so i ordered the frankford arsenal variety packs in 50 and 55 grians from midway, i wanted a small sampleing of a few different rounds to try. i'd also really like to try some 40grainers too, but i dont want to get to ahead of myself with buying components i cant even load till my next break from school. thanks for all the quick replies! i hear hodgdons has a small variety pack of powder, 4 4oz of some of their more popular powders, should i even search for this or stick to what we've established here?

Hey tricky..If it was me ,I would buy a pound of 748 or Varget and see if it works.Varget is a slower burning powder than 748 or BL(C)2.Or try H335 or IMR 4895.If you cant get a certain powder to shoot satisfactorily switch to another powder but after you have exhausted every angle...

I use H4895 with 45 grain bullets, and H335 in heavier ones.

Bench Mark 2 runs well in any 223 I have tried it in.Win 748 usually goes well too. I usually use Federal primers in most rifles but my son's 223 likes the remingtons.

Across 30 rounds with 24.3 grains of BM2 fired in relays of five we had 55 grain ballistic tips average 3331 fps with a ES of 5.65 and SD of 2.23.

Average group size 0.296.Low of 0.105 and max of 0.395.

Remington police 223 with a 2 ounce trigger.
