Alright, I'm home. I was way off. The Win. Large rifle primers I have are WLR and WLRM both. I know I saw some I had somewhere that said for both. They must have been old ! Scott, Fed 215's lite off 100.5 grs. of Retumbo in my .300 RUM good enough too. I am going to try some of the Wim LRM's and see if they give me more FPS or accuracy. Eagleye. mine are in a white box. They are 5 or more years old. Do you think age changes them in any way ? I read something that the nitro cellulose gets more potent in powder and primers. Scott ?

If they have been stored properly, I don't believe age has any effect on the way primers act. I am using some old CIL (made in Canada) primers that have been out of production for more than 30 years. They still work just fine, and deliver outstanding consistency and accuracy. No Nitrocellulose in primers anyway, only lead Styphnate, ground glass and some other components to add brisance. Regards, Eagleye.

Eagleye, thanks for the info. I had some really old CCI' one time that I got from my ex father in law. He kept them in the garage though but I had allot of duds with them and tossed them. Never had a problem with even 10 yr. old primers stored in the house. Take care,

I did some primer testing some time ago and found Winchester LRM to be the hottest, but also the most inconsistent large variations in power between primers.
Federal 215 were more consistent but not as powerful.

I just got back from the gun show. I bought 1000 Fed 215's, several boxes of ammo, and 5 lbs of powder.

He didnt have any Wins. He had great prices on his powder. 16 to 18 bucks for 1 lb containers. His bullets were about the same as Cabelas and his primers too.

5lbs of powder sounds like alot, but I bought 48 pounds of 2230C at the end of 2005 and now its gone. I use Remington 7 1/2 primers with it even though 6 1/2 shoot a slightly smaller group.

Wyo,
Forget Retumbo. Go with WC-872. It's cheaper, ($40.00 for 8 pounds), meters better, and is far more consistant. http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html I bought 48 pounds a couple years ago, and it's all I now shoot in all of my overbore magnums. You can start by loading with H-870 data. The stuff is so slow you almost have to try to get into trouble with it. Bill T.

Try I will ! Who makes it ? I have a pound of H870 that I have never even used . I'll check the website you listed when I get home. Here at work I'll get websensed "weapons" $40.00 for 8 lbs. ? Has to be a catch... Does it shoot as good as Retumbo if you have tried it ? Thanks ! PS. In all the manuals I have the H870 is a little slower in the fps. dept. too.Last edited on Mon Mar 26th, 2007 10:46 PM by wyo300rum

Wyo,
It's military surplus. All of it is Mil-Spec. Jeff Bartlett is very good to deal with. You can get the same powder even cheaper thru Pat's Reloading http://www.patsreloading.com It is a Ball Powder, and flows very well thru a measure without all that "crunching" commonly associated with slow burning, long grained stick powders. If you buy 6, 8 pounds jugs, he'll pay the Haz-Mat fee. It doesn't get any better than that. It's all that I use anymore in all of my overbore magnums, .300 and up. Bill T.

Havent used it so I dont know for sure but it may be too slow to reach enough pressure. I cant get enough Retumbo in a .257 case behind a 100 grain bullet.

FRM, I haven't tried going over the listed max loads for 150 and 180 gr. bullets(.300 RUM) with Retumbo of 106.00 and 100.5 gr. because of the begining signs of pressure. And with the 180 gr. being so accurate and at 3360+ fps and the 150 at 3650 fps, what the hell ? I was looking at loads for a Barnes 130 gr. XBT the other night when we talking about bullet drop w/heavy and light bullets. I saw loads going 3862 fps w/103 gr. Rel 25 and 3825 w/119.5 gr. H870 (Bill) . Norma MRP was 98.0 gr. for 3818 fps. And if you really wanted to get crazy, how about a 110 gr. at 4051 fps w/107.0 gr. Rel 25. Or 4067 fps w/101.0 gr. MRP. 4072 fps. w/121.5 gr. (crap !) H870. That would be a .30 cal. bullet don't ya know ?

That would be pretty sick. Should do a nice job on taking out your target. I would have to try it just to see what it looked like.

FRM, PS. what does that tell you with slow burning powder and a light bullet ? That powder is probably better suited for 117-120 gr. bullets. A little faster powder with 100 gr. might give you more fps and maybe a little more PSI. I still think you should try H-1000, Rel 22 or IMR 7828 (could of sent you some) Or slower ones like Rel 25 or maybe H870 ? Never used it but I know it's slow. I feel a powder war coming on....

Different strokes for different folks. Some rifles will like one powder better than another. I should have bought some H-1000 at the gun show just to try it. I will get some one day and see how it does. I bought 150 .25 cal bullets so I have plenty to test with now.
