I just bought a .338 Lapua and need to consider the best primer.  I recall an article about three years ago, wherein one of the major manufacturers was producing a primer hotter than the Federal 215 magnum.  Does anyone recall which one it is?

Some NRA dude did a test on primers by modifying a Model 70 to shoot primers and BBs. Using this he determined that the hottest primer was the Remington 7 1/2 Bench Rest primer. I doubt if this will help you any with 338 Lapua.

I've never seen the list for rifle/pistol primers.I would buy a box of each and see what works best.

I have a .338-378 Weatherby Magnum in a Weatherby Accumark and the only primer I use are the Federal Magnum #215. I load primarily WC-872 Military Ball Powder which is very slow burning, and difficult to ignite. The Federal #215's light it off with very good shot to shot consistency.  Bill T.

I use the 215 as well in all my magnum rifles. It has worked well for me so far.

I read a test in one of the mags on primers a few years ago. I still remember them saying that Fed 215 mag primer was the hottest. Had something to do with that purple coating on them . It enhanced the burn or something like that. The only other thing I remembered was that Win large rifle were the hottest standerd primer. Funny thing, not too long after that they listed the Win WLR for standard and magnum loads...I have been using Fed 215 only for years every since.

Winchester Large Rifle Mags are the hottest, followed by Federal 215's. Several tests have been done over the past decade, with the results being similar in each. Regards, Eagleye.

Eagleye, Did you read that in anything recent ? I'd like to check that out. I don't doubt you one bit. I was assuming that Fed. 215's were the hottest from what I read years ago. What makes me wonder about Win. is when their LR primers say for standard and magnum loads.

i am a great big fan of the federal 210 and prefer the gold medal match 210 primer but if can't find any like now then the 210 both do a fantastic job and are clean hitters. they have the perfect kind of flame when they are hit with a firing pin. they are not a blast that goes everywhere but it is concentrated blast that ignites very well. i read some articles and saw some of the testing on the different ones and went with federal over the others. the other i saw that i would choose if i couldn't get was a br 2 from cci with similar characteristics like the federal 210

hope this helps someone

The Federal 210 & 210M are great primers, but lack the brisance to consistently ignite the large charge of powder demanded by the 338 Lapua and similar capacity cases. Go with the 215 if you use Federal, but as I already stated, the WLRM is a bit hotter yet. I have done some personal tests with the 338 Remington Ultra mag, using 250 grain bullets and AA8700 powder. When you compare the Federal 215 to the WLRM, you will find the WLRM delivering about 30-40 FPS more average velocity, with all other factors equal. I have noticed a similar difference in the 30-378 Weatherby with 200 grain bulets and Vihtavuori N170 powder. If you switch to the Remington 9½M, velocities drop an additional 35-45 fps average. Regards, Eagleye.

Good discussionas I am looking for a set of 30-378 Weatherby mag dies.So far I have always used Fed 215 MAG primers to light off my 300 Win Mag cartridges but the 30-378 is a big ,big case full of slow burning coal.

Eagleye, I have always used Fed 215's in my 7 Mag and 300 RUM but I do have some Win LR mag primers that I bought about 5 years ago. Do you think they are the same as they are making now and would the age change their burning characteristics ? Also, they list for regular and magnum loads on the box. I remember years ago they quit making mag primers and had the one does it all primer. Are they still that way with Win ?

Winchester has made a specific Large Rifle Magnum Primer for quite some time now. The regular Large rifle primer is Designated WLR and says on the Box "For Standard Large Rifle loads" The Magnum Version is designated WLRM and says on the box "For Large Rifle Magnum Loads"  For many years up to a couple of decades ago or so, Winchester had only one large rifle primer, the 8½-120. Later they renamed them WLR and the box said on it "For Large Rifle Standard and Magnum Loads" This was dropped as soon as Winchester began making the hot WLRM Primer. Early lots of the WLRM stated: "For Large Rifle Magnum Loads Only" Winchester more recently quit nickle plating their Rifle primers and changed the color of the box to blue from white, but the designations remain the same. If Yours say "For Large Rifle Standard and Magnum Loads" on the box, they are NOT Magnum primers. Regards Eagleye.

I noticed that also, but the amount of other relevant information couldn't be overlooked.

I use Fed 215M primers in my .338LM with 98.0gr Retumbo(light load for casual plinking) and a 250gr SMK projectile!  Could probably use a normal(Bench Rest Primer) but no sense in just making the powder upset.....I want it mad!
