Rereading the posting about the primer caper got me to thinking about the last time primers became scarce. Anybody else remember that time period? Primers were almost impossible to get, even though the manufacturers were running three shifts to try to ride the demand. Rumors were flying, with new ones popping up every week or so, mostly involving a dastardly plot by the Feds to limit or destroy handloading.
I never did run out of primers then, although I did run out of some types.
Lowest inventory level I will admit to now is I have only 700 or so small rifle primers on hand. Othewrwise, I'm in pretty good shape.
Anybody sweating primers?

Try to stay ahead of my own demand, but I never go shopping for just primers. I normally just pick up a flat(10K) when I'm getting the new hunting gear or whatever. Just last week I had a flat of CCI small rifle benchrest primers follow me home.....do I need them? Maybe not, but now I have them in the box. Maybe a flat of CCI large rifle will follow me home on payday?
I remember the "Primer Scare", forums were pretty much unheard of then, and information was just passed by mouth to the next listener. Was there ever really a shortage, or was it panic buying on the consumer end that caused a shortage? I don't remember which it was, but it sure made the prices go up(and stay up). Sort of like gas prices?

Right now Federal is a tad hard to come by here. But of course they do have commitments for supplying the troops. Winchester is still good to go but when I talked with Powder Valley they did say that they expected Winchester to get a tad swamped because of Federal. Kinda the cause and effect deal. Either way I'm not getting to worried about it.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

i could be wrong, but i doubt that the war has anything to do with it. i don't recall hearing about any shortage of primers during the vietnam war and i am sure that there was a hell of a lot more shooting going on then.

Anybody sweating primers? I remember the last one when the Clinton gang asked about making primers with a "life" built into them. There are a few people talking about a shortage at present. It is all nonsense. Primers are available and in these uncertain times it would be wise to have some on hand but to panic and go out and buy anything (and everything) that is out there is foolish. To have a stock on hand is common sense. Prices have gone up allot in the last few years. Every time I get a deal on components I add to the pile. Last year it was .223 brass i got for $25 for 3000. Today it was 1500 pieces of 9mm brass for $20 If you shoot 100 rounds a year then 1000 primers is allot. If you have a wife that likes 3 gun then 1000 primers is a few weeks of shooting. Just my two cents.

The primer shortage is caused by every manufacturer worldwide loading ammo for the military in every country.A couple of years ago at the SHOT show in Las Vegas I bought 1000 rounds on PMP 45acp 220gr ball ammo for $150 from Century Arms but that source has disappeared .Century had PMP Ammo in 223,243($4+ per 20),30-06,300wm($8/20),7mm,7mm mag for cheap it's gone. http://www.centuryarms.com lots of interesting semiauto rifles we're forbidden to purchase in ca.Here's some sources for ammo, primers, etc., http://www.outdoormarksman.com or http://www.buyammo.com and for powder http://www.crowshootingsupply.com says wholesale but it's a minimum 48 pound order and friends have ordered from the company. This is a correct analysis. It is also causing a "chain reaction" effect with reloaders. A year and a half ago .223 / 5.56 MM was so cheap to buy, (I paid as little as $2.99 @ box for Federal American Eagle), it didn't pay to reload it. Now it's as or more expensive than any other centerfire caliber. This caused black rifle shooters to scramble to buy components, presses, dies, and every other tool for reloading. This in turn dried up the supply of small rifle primers even further. Some reloading supply outfits are reporting a 2 to 3 month wait for some progressive press models like the Hornady Lock And Load Progressive. I had to hunt for a set of .223 Small Base Rifle Dies. And I've got 3 Sportsman's Warehouses, a Cabela's, as well as a Bass Pro Shop all within 25 minutes of my house. Midway has been out of bulk Remington and Winchester 55 gr. FMJ bullets for months, and they do not know when to expect anymore. This will correct itself in time. Sooner or later these ammo manufacturers will fill their contract obligations, and .223 will once again be plentyful, and the price will drop accordingly. Perhaps not to as low as it was because the raw material cost have risen, but it will be priced much more realistic than it is now. Bill T.

Just like other shortages, there is no shortage of gasoline, only a shortage of cheap gasoline. This thought can also be applied to powder, shot, cases, and when they come back, primers. The powers that be say that it is just the law of supply and demand, but I believe there is a lot of manipulation and politics invoved against our sport! Good shooting

The primer scare of '94 The harder we looked thwe higher the prices went When prices-or our patience ran out-they once again became available at a reasonable cost. The American public creates it's own shortages whether real or imaginary. From a storm coming in to a serious threat to our nation. The key here is to stock up what you will need for the near future whether components or food/water

I always keep an inventory of 2K of each size,... when I crack open a box that reduces that figure,... it goes on the shopping list to pick up 2K more.

Part of it might be production, but I'll just bet a lot of it is as it was before: sales outpacing production. I can't find much in the way of Remington primers on the shelves around here, but there's plenty of Winchester and of course CCI. One of my favorite online sources had gobs of Wolf, so taking Tubb's recommendation I ordered a few. The way I shoot, components are the least of any influence on accuracy anyway...

Interesting reading this from a couple of years ago ... and look where we are now.
It made me think back to '94 and the post above is correct, other than one AOL board I do not remember there being another gun forum around to discuss the shortage. There was the news mail usenet group, rec.guns that a lot of information was sent on ... but other than that it was all small talk and local chat at the local ranges and stores.
We have Ellet Bros here, and hundreds of people work for them, so word got around here pretty quickly back then.
Still, very interesting read from a couple of years ago in this thread - makes you stop and think.
Sure hope we recover from the current primer shortaged NLT Q1 of next year ... but I have my doubts.

I don't know if there's been a recent update on this topic, but as of June 1, 2009 I have not been able to find large rifle primers in Michigan, Indiana, California, or Wisconsin, and have been told Florida is out of them, too. This situation has been going on for several months. Any ideas why?

From what I've been able to gather from sources such as The NSSF, Shooting Wire, etc. #1 on the list is Law Enforcement and Military contract fullfilment. All manufacturing is humping it overtime to supply demand that is through the roof. Plus the fact that components are being used to make factory loads. On top of contracts to fulfill, there is still panic buying / hoarding purchases. The problem I see with the panic buying theory, is that I have seen absolutely nothing to buy on the store shelves for the last couple of months, save for shotgun ammo. It seems that if primers and such are being shipped to retailers, it doesn't seem to be getting there. I have quite a few compnents, but I just wonder when this is really all going to settle down.
