Is there any danger using rifle brass that's been trimmed 6 or 7 thousands too short (too short as per the reloading manual "trim" length)? There seems to be more than enough neck left over to seat the bullet?

I've shot a fair amount of .270Win loaded in cases that were inadvetently trimmed .005" under the "trim to" length & had no issues.

If I load  some ammo for somebody else, I always make sure, the cases are somewhat shorter than the manuals tell me because I don't  know his rifle and/or cleaning habits.

This way I am fairly sure there will be no pressure issue because of too long cases.

Paul.

It is not unusual from me to trim .010 shoter than manuals call for. Having them al lthe same is more important, but even a few  thousandths isn't going to cause a wide drift in neck tension on the bullet unles you are setting the bullet way, way, out thre

Before I had one made, my handloads in 7.5x54 French were trimmed with a Lee length gauge for the 7.62x54, which was .020 short. No problems.

Should be no problem. If you can seat the bullet deep enough for a sound mechanical fit (about one caliber), you shouldn't have any problems.

i have used 270 made from 30/06,about .050 shorter.no issues whatsoever.but if cases are too long and jamming into the front of the chamber it is a whole different issue. short=safe

I'd have to join the consensus on this issue. It's one of life's quirky mysteries in a world wherein we receive dozens of spam e-mails each day droning on and on about how great it is to make things ... well, longer ...  when considering case neck length, a little shorter is safer than a little too long. Apart from difficult chambering, pressures can rise to potentially dangerous levels when the case necks are too long. Case head separations can and do occur under such conditions, and it's quite an operation to get the rest of the case out of the chamber when it separates at the web. Had that happen once with a 7.62x39 handload in an SKS, although I don't know that case length was the issue there. Could have been an incipient separation that I missed on inspection.

The "trim to" recommendations are, in my experience, pretty hard to hit exactly, at least with the rotary trimmer I have. They almost always come out a thousandth or two or three shorter than the specs - I just can't seem to hit the sweet spot with that blasted trimmer. But I've never seen any indication of a problem with brass that's a couple thousandths too short.
