Does anyone here know if there is some inexpensive brass that can be fire formed/or die formed to use in a 7.62x54R as most brass that is available is high price or unavailable and needs to be back ordered.
Thanks Darrel/cutshurt

| Look on the Graf & Sons website. They have boxer primed ammo at a good price and brass for reloading from Prvi Partizan.

You could make them by cutting down 8X56mm Steyer but its much harder to come by than Russian.
I bought 100 pieces of Norma, it will probably last me the rest of my life.

Just for s**ts and grins, I tried Donnelly's methods to form one piece of 7.62x54R from .45/70. Gave up after about 20 minutes. The process made Norma brass look quit resonable.
The Graf and Son's 7.62x54R is good stuff. Lapua is a bit pricier, but you won't find better brass. You can even buy S&B ammunition and use the brass for handloading. The first lots that came into the country, including that produced for Winchster had shallow primer pockets, and was a PITA to load.

I have plenty of 4570 brass, I may try one or two for the Nagant, what dies are involved in the forming? I'll get the brass from Graf & Sons, I bought the Nagant on a lark and then when I saw the price for brass at midway USA, I about crapped my pants. I cant stand not reloading my own ammo though, even if there is plenty of surplus out there. The Steyer sounds doable also I will keep my eye out at the local gun shows. I got some "I think" it was silver wolf or bear I cant remember witch animal it was, the stuff was cheep and they are zink plated steel cases, but thay dont go where I want them to. I may get some of the surplus stuff to but I hear you better clean your gun right away after shooting the stuff.

| Forming 7.62x564R from .45/70 involves swaging the case head, turning and chamfering the rim, a couple of intermediate dies during the necking down...just isn't worth it, IMO. Not when commercial brass is readily available. 8x56R is tougher to get then 7.62x54R, I sure wouldn't waste it.

| Especially when I found a source of surplus BOXER primed 7.62X54R. It sells for 25 cents a round, which isn't good as surplus bullets go, but for a fully loaded reloadable round, it's not bad. Last edited on 8 June 2008 12:10 AM by gandog56

| Winchester loads 7.62X54 in 180Gr Soft point and 180gr FMJ. I think they are Hanson Brass. I've been loading it for years with no problem. You might have to special order them but last time I checked they were still available. In fact Natchez Shooters Supply has them on sale right now 17.49 for a 20 rd box of Soft Points. FMJ about a buck less. RD Last edited on 8 June 2008 04:00 AM by Rockydog

Never really thought about reloading yet for my Mosin(s) but just in case what exact bullets you guys using? I hope to be picking up an atypical 91/30 someone put a little work into. I definitely liked the front sight on it.
I'll post pics when I get it. Should be tomorrow at the latest...I'm waiting for the purchase approval, been 48 hours now...what the heck.

| I shoot a fair number of cast bullets in my MNs. The Lee TL .312 design for the .303 and 7.62x39 works well. Jacketed bullets, my favorite is Remington's bulk Corloc 180 gr RN for the .303 Mikes at .3105, just about perfect for .310 bores. It shoots about 1 1/4 MOA in my pretend sniper.

Well, the prices of available surplus makes only one reason to reload these. That is to find the best grouping loads for YOUR gun. I really prefer jacketed bullets for my rifles so I can push the velocity up. So I use Hornady Interlock 303 British 150 grain spire points. They are sized to .312". I found my Mosins don't like .308" bullets.

I like playing with milsurps, but usually don't shoot milsurp ammo. Handloads invaribly shoot better. can't think of one of my milsurp calibers I don't load for.
I have one lone Finn M27 MN that is a .308 bore, and ammo loaded with .308 bullets will do 1 1/2 MOA from a bench. The rest of my Mosins do need a .310 or .311 bullet.

Forgot to mention, they are non-corrosive.

| I was looking for bras for my MN and finally decided to buy some milsurp that was berdan primed and am going to try to convert it. my 14 year old son gets wild eyed like me when it comes to reloading so it will be a worthwhile project. The project will be a bit challenging but a great opportunity to have my son at my side and teach him some problem solving skills. More updates as the project takes shape.

I'm not agaist forming brass...I form .351 WSL from .357 Maximum, 10.4 Swiss from .348 Winchster, 7.65x53 Mauser from .30/06, 9 Makarov from 9x19, and a bunch of others. To me, there are some valid reasons to form one caliber to another...expense, for one, or you might have a bunch of a common and cheap caliber, and need something a bit more unusual.
I've got buckets of 9x19 brass, never going to use it all. 9x19 to 9x18 Mak is a simple and quick conversion. .30/06 to 7.65x53 Mauser is a simple and quick conversion, and I've got a bunch of .30/06 brass. OTOH, forming something like 7.62x54R from .45/70 isn't quick, isn't easy, and isn't worth the time and resources to me to do it. Neither is converting Berdan to Boxer primers, as long as there is Boxer primed brass available at a decent price. YMMV, but that's how I see it.
If my kids stuck to me when trying some of the odder conversions, about the only thing they would learn would be some new vocabulary.
