Hi All,
I am looking for some info and this seems to be the place to find it.
First, I am not a handloader, I am a penmaker. I am in the process of making a cartridge pen for a friend of mine who just went bear hunting in Alaska.
He took the bear with a .375 magnum, and I am making a pen out of the brass from the round he got him with. I am going to have to modify a larger calibre bullet to use as the tip.
My questions to you guys are:
What type of bullet will be best for machining? I have to drill through the round and cut threads inside the bottom of it to attach it to the transmission of the pen so I need a fairly solid material.
Next, I need the bullet to be a little larger than the neck size of the .375 mag to allow for fitting it to the pen. I am in uncharted waters with calibres over a .44, so what sizes come next over the .375H&H mag?
And lastly, once I figure out what I need, I will be checking to see if anyone has 2 of the rounds needed that they would be willing to sell me. 1 for practice and 1 for real.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I would think that one of the Barnes solid copper projectiles would be ideal for you project as machining and threading it should be a snap.
A 375 bullet is 3/8 of an inch in diameter. Most pens aren't that large are they?
Barnes makes bullets in most if not all of the large bores. I don't know for sure but I would guess the next bore size up would be something in the .400 range.
Of course anything much larger than 375 will not look right in a 375 case.

No they aren't that large, thats why it's a custom pen.
It won't be going IN the case, I need it to be FLUSH to the outside diameter of the brass.

Ok, I think I get the picture. a 375 bullet is .375 in diameter the neck wall thickness is nomially 0.013.
So .375 +0.013 + 0.013 gives you a bullet diameter of .401. You would have to turn the shank of a 401 bullet to 375 to fit into the case. That should give you a flush fit to the sides of the case.
It should be easy enough to check Barnes Bullets website to see if they make a bullet in that diameter.

Here's what MidwayUSA offers in .40 caliber projectiles.
http://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/search?search_keywords=.40+caliber+bullets&category_selector=all_products&Click+to+Begin+Search.x=10&Click+to+Begin+Search.y=15
You'll have to look through the results a little to get away from the misc. "40" stuff, but it should give you some ideas.
Sounds like an interesting project that could possibly find a place in many stores....
